Wood-look vinyl plank floor laid flat and tight in a bright room

A bathroom is the hardest small floor in the house. The plank has to go under the toilet, not around it; it has to run under a vanity that is staying or stop cleanly at one that is; it has to meet a tub with a sealed joint and a doorway with a transition that does not trip anyone. The plank itself is waterproof. The floor is only waterproof if the edges are.

A laundry room adds appliances. The washer and dryer come out, which means hoses, the drain and the dryer vent, and they go back on a floor that has to hold their weight and their vibration. Gas dryers are the one thing we do not disconnect ourselves; that is a licensed plumber or gas fitter, and we schedule around it.

We use a rigid-core plank in these rooms, floated over a flat subfloor, with an expansion gap at every wall and cabinet that is then covered by shoe or filled with caulk at the wet edges. The toilet comes off, the floor goes under the flange, and the toilet goes back on a new seal with the flange shimmed if the new floor changed its height.

  • Room size and the number of cuts: a powder room is mostly cuts, a laundry room is mostly appliances

How long it takes

A powder room or a hall bath: half a day to a day, toilet reset the same day. A laundry room with the machines moved: a day. Add a day if old tile is coming out or the subfloor needs repair.

Situations and options

Around the toilet

The toilet comes off. Planks run under the flange with a small gap around it, never cut in a horseshoe around the bowl. The toilet goes back on a new wax or waxless seal, with a flange extender if the new floor sits higher. A cracked or rotted flange goes to a licensed plumber.

At the vanity

If the vanity is being replaced, the floor runs under it and the new vanity sits on the plank. If it is staying, the plank stops at the toe kick with an expansion gap covered by shoe. A pedestal sink gets the plank run under its base with a caulked edge.

At the tub and shower

Plank meets the tub apron or the shower curb with a small gap, filled with a color-matched silicone so water on the floor cannot get under the plank. This is the edge that matters most; a bathroom floor fails here or nowhere.

Under the washer and dryer

Machines out, floor run to the wall, machines back on the plank. Rigid core handles the weight and the spin cycle. A drain pan under the washer sits on the plank. Electric dryer: we unplug and reconnect. Gas dryer: a licensed trade disconnects and reconnects.

Is LVP a good floor for a bathroom?

Yes. The plank is waterproof through its thickness, it is warmer underfoot than tile, and it goes over a flat subfloor without a cement board layer. The floor is only as waterproof as its edges, so the joints at the tub, the shower, the toilet and the door threshold get sealed with a color-matched silicone. Standing water left for days can still work under any floating floor, so a leak still has to be fixed.

Do you cut vinyl plank around the toilet or take the toilet off?

We take the toilet off. Planks run under the flange with a small gap around it, then the toilet goes back on a new seal. Cutting a horseshoe around the bowl leaves a gap that shows and holds water, and it means the plank can never be taken up without breaking it. If the new floor changes the height at the flange, a flange extender brings it up to the plank.

Does LVP go under the vanity or around it?

Under it if the vanity is new or being replaced, so a future vanity of any size sits on finished floor. Around it if the vanity is staying, with an expansion gap at the toe kick covered by shoe mould. A floating floor should not be pinned under a heavy cabinet across a whole room, but a normal bathroom vanity on a small floor is fine either way.

Can you install LVP under a washer and dryer?

Yes. The machines come out, the floor runs to the wall, and the machines go back on the plank. Rigid-core LVP takes the weight and the vibration; we set the washer level on it so it does not walk. An electric dryer we unplug and reconnect ourselves. A gas dryer is disconnected and reconnected by a licensed plumber or gas fitter, and we schedule the floor around that.

Do you caulk vinyl plank at the bathtub?

Yes. The plank stops a small gap short of the tub apron or shower curb, and that gap gets a color-matched silicone, not a hard grout or a wood shoe. It seals the edge water actually reaches and it stays flexible as the floor moves with the seasons. The same caulk goes around the toilet base if you want it, or the toilet sits on the plank with the seal underneath doing the work.

What transition goes between LVP in the bathroom and the hallway?

A T-mould if the hall floor is the same height, a reducer if the hall is lower, or an end cap against carpet or a taller tile. It sits under the door when the door is closed so each room sees its own floor. If the whole floor is the same plank, it runs straight through the doorway with no transition at all, as long as the room is small enough for the floor to float as one piece.
