Aluminum-wrapped garage door trim is what most siding crews put on a new house: the wood jambs and header are capped with aluminum coil bent to the profile, color-matched to the siding or the trim, and the joints are sealed. It does not need paint and it sheds water. On an older house with painted wood jambs, wrapping them is the way to stop repainting the most beat-up trim on the house.
The catch is what is under the wrap. Aluminum covers wood; it does not fix it. A jamb that is soft at the bottom stays soft under the coil, and now nobody can see it. We check the bottom of each jamb and the ends of the header with a screwdriver before anything gets bent, cut out and replace what is rotted, and only then wrap. A wrap over rot is the job we get called to redo.
The details that make a wrap last are small: a drip cap over the header so water does not run behind the wrap, the bottom of the jamb wrap held off the slab so it can drain, seams lapped the right way, and the stop molding set on top of the wrap so the door seals against something flat. We also re-lag the door track brackets through the wrap into solid wood, because the brackets are on that jamb.

Situations and options
Wrap over sound wood
The jambs and header are solid and just tired of paint. We clean them, bend coil to the profile, cap the jambs and header, add a drip cap and stop, and seal the seams. No wood is replaced.
Jamb-bottom repair, then wrap
The bottom foot of the jamb is soft. We cut it out, splice in PVC held off the slab, re-lag the track bracket, and then wrap the whole leg. The splice disappears under the coil and the water problem is gone with it.
Wrap the outside casing too
Some openings have a brickmould or flat casing outside the jamb. We wrap that in a second bend so the whole opening is one color and one material, with the drip cap over the top of the casing.
Garage door plus service door
The garage service door and the house-to-garage entry get the same treatment on the same trip. The second opening is cheaper than the first because the brake is already set up.

Is it a good idea to wrap garage door trim in aluminum?
Yes, when the wood under it is sound or has been repaired first. Aluminum coil color-matched to the trim ends the repainting, sheds water and holds up for years. The only bad wrap is the one over rot: the coil hides the problem and the jamb keeps rotting. We check both jambs and the header with a screwdriver before we bend anything, and fix what we find before it gets covered.
Can you wrap a garage door jamb that is already rotted?
Not without fixing it first. We cut the rotted section out, usually the bottom foot or two of the jamb, splice in PVC held just off the slab, re-lag the track bracket into solid wood, and then wrap the whole leg. The repair is on the quote as its own item so you can see what the wrap is going over.
What color can the aluminum wrap be?
Trim coil comes in a long list of stock colors: whites, almonds, browns, grays, blacks and most common siding colors. We match it to your existing trim, your siding or your garage door, whichever you want the opening to read as. The stop molding comes in fewer colors, so on an unusual trim color the stop is usually the closest stock match.
Does wrapping the jambs affect the garage door tracks?
The vertical track brackets are lagged into the jambs, so we work around them. The wrap goes on behind the brackets where we can and is notched where we cannot, and the lags go back through the coil into solid wood. We check the track is still plumb before we leave. Springs, cables and the opener stay with a garage door company.
Do you replace the stop molding when you wrap the trim?
We recommend it. The old wood stop with a stapled seal is usually what held water against the jamb, and it will not sit flat on the new wrap. Vinyl stop molding with the seal molded in goes on top of the coil, sides and header, set so the seal touches the door without pushing on it. It comes in the common trim colors.
How long does a garage door wrap last?
The coil itself does not rot, peel or need paint; the finish is baked on. What makes a wrap fail is water getting behind it, which is why the drip cap over the header, the bottom held off the slab and the sealed seams matter more than the coil brand. Done that way, the next time anyone touches that trim is when the garage door itself is replaced.
