Seams that show come in three kinds. A ridge: the tape joint was built up but not feathered wide, so there is a hump you can see in side light, most often at the butt joints where two sheet ends meet. A line: the tape edge or a bubble shows through because the mud over it is thin. And flashing: the joints look duller or shinier than the rest of the wall because the mud was painted without primer and soaked up the paint differently.
Each one has a different fix. Ridges get sanded down and the joint feathered out wider, sometimes eighteen inches or more each side on a butt joint, so the hump spreads into the wall. Bubbled or loose tape is cut out and re-taped. Flashing is a primer problem: the whole wall gets a coat of drywall primer so mud and paper take paint the same way.
Touching up only the seams does not work. The fix always ends with the whole wall primed and painted corner to corner, or the repaired areas will flash again. We tell you from the photos which walls need joint work and which only need the primer and paint.

Flashing only
The joints are flat but look different after paint. Seal the whole wall with drywall primer, then two coats of paint. The fastest fix.
Ridged butt joints
The humps across the wall where two sheet ends meet. Sanded down and feathered out wide on both sides so the ridge spreads out, then primed and painted.
Full skim
When every seam and screw shows, a thin skim coat over the whole wall is faster than chasing joints one at a time. Sanded, primed, painted.

Why are my drywall seams showing through the paint?
Either the joint has a ridge because it was not feathered wide enough, the tape is loose or thinly covered, or the mud was not primed and flashes through the paint. You can tell which by looking with light from the side: a shadow is a ridge, a line is tape, and a dull or shiny patch is flashing.
What is drywall flashing?
Flashing is when taped joints and patches look duller or shinier than the rest of the wall after paint. Joint compound and drywall paper absorb paint differently, so without a primer coat they dry to different sheens. The fix is to prime the whole wall with drywall primer, then repaint it.
Can I just paint over drywall seams that show?
Not if they are ridges or tape lines; more paint makes them shinier and easier to see. If it is only flashing, a coat of primer and two coats of paint on the whole wall fixes it. Ridges need to be sanded and feathered first.
How do you fix a ridged butt joint?
We sand the hump down as far as it goes without cutting the tape, then feather mud out wide on both sides so the rise spreads over a few feet and cannot be seen. Two or three coats, sanded, primed and painted with the wall. Wide feathering is what hides it.
Why do my drywall patches show after painting?
Usually because the patch was not primed, or its texture does not match the wall around it. A primer coat over the patch and a repaint of the whole wall fixes a flashing patch. A smooth patch on a textured wall needs its texture matched first.
Do you repaint the whole wall or just the seams?
The whole wall, corner to corner. Touching up only the seams leaves new paint beside old, and it shows. Painting is quoted as its own line, and you can also have us prime and paint it yourself.
