Attics in Twin Cities houses are a lattice of joists with drywall screwed to the bottom and blown-in insulation on top. Step between the joists and a foot goes through. Insulation crews, HVAC installers, cable techs and homeowners looking for a leak all do it. The damage is a ragged hole with the drywall hanging, and a pile of insulation on the floor below.
The repair is done from both sides. In the attic the insulation is raked back, broken drywall is pulled, and backing is screwed between the joists so the patch has something to land on. From below the hole is squared, a new piece is screwed in, taped and coated three times, the texture is matched and the ceiling is primed. Then the insulation goes back over the top so the patch is not a cold spot. Cracked seams and nail pops from the joists being walked on get retaped at the same visit.

Foot through the ceiling
The classic: a ragged hole between two joists with the drywall hanging. Backed from the attic, patched from below, textured and primed. One patch, two visits.
Insulation crew damage
A blown-in hose punched through the ceiling, or the crew stepped through near the hatch. We patch it and put the new insulation back over the repair so it does not become a cold spot.
Cracked seams after an HVAC install
A new furnace, air handler or duct run in the attic means a lot of weight on the joists, and the ceiling below cracks at the seams and pops nails. The seams are retaped, the pops reset and the ceiling refinished.
Ceiling around the attic hatch
The drywall around a hatch or scuttle takes the most abuse. We patch the corners, reset the trim and, if it is missing, add an insulated lid.

How do you fix a foot that went through the ceiling?
From both sides. In the attic the insulation is pushed back and backing is screwed between the joists around the hole. From the room the hole is squared to clean board and a new piece of drywall is screwed to the backing and joists. It is taped, coated three times, the texture is matched and the patch is primed. Then the insulation is put back over it.
Can the hole be patched from below without going in the attic?
A small hole can, with a California patch or a backing strip slipped through the hole. A hole big enough for a foot needs backing between the joists, and the insulation on top has to be moved and put back, so the attic side matters. If the attic is hard to reach we can do most of the backing through the hole itself, but the insulation will be uneven over the patch.
Why is my hallway ceiling cracked after the furnace was replaced?
Because someone walked the joists for a day carrying equipment, and the drywall screwed to those joists flexed. Seams crack where the tape lets go, and screws pop where the board moved. It is cosmetic, not structural. The seams are retaped, the pops are reset with a new screw beside each one, and the ceiling is refinished and textured.
Will the patch match a textured ceiling?
Yes. Knockdown and orange peel are sprayed and blended into the surrounding texture. Popcorn is sprayed with an aggregate texture chosen to match the size of the old. An older popcorn ceiling may call for an asbestos test before anyone sands it, and we tell you when that applies. The repair is primed; painting the whole ceiling is its own line on the quote.
The contractor who did it says they will pay. How does that work?
We write the quote as line items with photos so you can send it to them, and we invoice you or them by check or direct deposit, whichever you arrange. We do not chase the other contractor for payment. It helps to photograph the hole and the insulation on the floor before anything is cleaned up.
Do you put the insulation back over the repair?
Yes. The insulation that was raked back or fell through is put back over the patch to the depth around it, and any that was lost is topped up so the patch is not a cold spot that frosts in winter. If the attic is short on insulation overall, we can quote a top-up as a separate line.
