Security Storm Door Installation — Heavy Frame, Deadbolt, Solid Mount

You want the front door open to the screen in summer without leaving the house wide open.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

Security storm door installation is a heavy-frame steel or reinforced storm door, with a keyed handle and deadbolt or a multi-point lock, mounted with long screws through the brickmould into the wall framing so it is not hanging on trim alone. JMB Builders supplies and installs them across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per door. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per door, storm door included
  • Screwed into the framing, not just the trim
  • Deadbolt or multi-point lock options
Arched brick surround with a new double casement window, front entry at right

A regular storm door is a thin aluminum frame, a glass or screen panel and a push-button latch. It keeps out wind and bugs. A security storm door, sold as heavy duty or security storm doors or steel security screen doors, has a heavier frame, a keyed deadbolt or a lock that throws at more than one point, and in some models a steel mesh or perforated screen in place of the plain screen. It is a way to leave the entry door open for air with something stronger than a screen between you and the step.

The door is only as strong as what it is screwed to. Most storm doors hang on a Z-bar fastened to the face of the brickmould, and brickmould is a strip of trim. We fasten the hinge side and the strike side with long screws that pass through the brickmould into the jack studs, shim behind where there is a gap, and replace soft or split brickmould before anything is mounted. That is the difference between a heavy door and a heavy door that stays put.

No storm door makes a house break-in proof, and we do not promise that. What we can do is mount it right, set the lock so it engages fully, and line up the deadbolt with the entry door's lock so neither one fights the other. If your goal is the entry door itself, see our security rated steel front door page. And if the storm door you have is sound, sometimes a repair is enough, and we will tell you.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • A straight-on photo of the entry door from outside with the old storm door open
  • A close-up of the brickmould at the bottom corners and the latch side
  • How you want to lock it: keyed outside only, or a deadbolt keyed on both sides
  • Your pick of frame color and glass or screen panel, or we bring options to the estimate

What JMB supplies

  • One in-person measure of the opening and a check of the brickmould and framing
  • The security storm door ordered to fit, hinge side chosen with you
  • Rotted or split brickmould replaced before the door is mounted
  • Long screws through the brickmould into the jack studs, shims where needed
  • Lock, deadbolt and strike set and checked against the entry door's hardware
  • Closer and wind chain adjusted, old storm door hauled away, photos in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • The door itself: heavy aluminum frame, steel frame, or steel mesh screen panel
  • Lock: keyed handle and deadbolt vs. a multi-point lock
  • Brickmould that is soft, split or too thin to take long screws
  • An opening that is out of square or between standard sizes
  • Removing an old storm door glued or screwed in hard
  • Painting replaced brickmould, quoted as a separate line

Send the photos above plus the width of the entry door slab. Tell us if the entry door has a deadbolt and where it sits on the door.

How long it takes

One security storm door on sound brickmould: about half a day, a little longer than a standard storm door because of the lock and the longer fasteners. Lead time depends on the door and is written on the quote.

Situations and options

Heavy-duty full-view storm door

Looks like a regular full-view storm door, with a heavier frame, a thicker panel and a keyed deadbolt. Good when you want the entry door to show and a better lock than a push button.

Steel security screen door

A steel frame with a steel mesh or perforated screen in place of the plain screen, so the screen does not tear or push in. Often chosen for a front door left open for air in summer.

Multi-point lock storm door

The handle throws latches at the top, middle and bottom of the door instead of one spot. It takes careful setting so all three engage, which is part of the install.

Deadbolt keyed on both sides

A key inside means no one can reach through a broken panel and turn it, but it also means the key has to be handy to get out in a hurry. Most people pick a thumb-turn inside; we talk it through before ordering.

Security Storm Door Installation — Heavy Frame, Deadbolt, Solid Mount: questions, answered

What is the difference between a security storm door and a regular storm door?

A security storm door has a heavier frame, a keyed deadbolt or multi-point lock, and often a steel mesh screen. A regular storm door has a lighter aluminum frame and a simple latch. Both are mounted to the brickmould, so how they are fastened matters as much as the door.

Can a storm door have a deadbolt?

Yes. Many heavy-duty storm doors come with a keyed handle and a separate deadbolt. We set the deadbolt so it throws fully into the strike and does not hit the entry door's own handle or lock behind it.

How is a security storm door mounted so it is solid?

The frame is screwed through the brickmould into the jack studs behind it with long screws, with shims where there is a gap. Soft or split brickmould is replaced first, because screws in rotten trim do not hold.

Will a security storm door stop a break-in?

No door makes a house break-in proof, and we do not claim that. A heavy frame and a deadbolt mounted into solid framing are harder to get through than a light storm door with a push-button latch. The entry door and its frame still do most of the work.

Is a steel security screen door hot or cold in Minnesota?

A steel mesh panel lets air through like any screen, so in winter you want a glass panel or an insert for the cold months. Ask about a model that takes both a glass panel and the security screen. We order the panels the door needs.

Can a security storm door go on an old front door frame?

Usually, once the brickmould is sound and the opening is close to square. If the trim is rotted or the frame is far out of square, we replace the brickmould or build out the opening first, and the quote says so.
