A louvered door is a door that lets air through. On a furnace or water heater closet with gas appliances, that air is combustion air: the burners need it, and a solid door on a small closet starves them. On a laundry room the dryer pulls air out of the room and the washer puts moisture in, and a louvered door lets the house replace one and carry off the other. On a utility room with a sump, a dehumidifier or a network rack, it is the same idea. The door does what a wall vent does, without cutting the wall.
One thing to be clear about. How much free air a gas appliance closet needs, and whether louvers alone are enough or the closet needs a duct to the outside, is a mechanical question your HVAC contractor answers to the code. We are carpenters. When your HVAC contractor or the inspector says the closet needs a louvered door, or a grille of a certain free area, we install it. We do not size combustion air and we do not touch the gas.
The door itself is a stock item. Full-louver and half-louver slabs and prehung units come in the standard sizes in primed pine, MDF and a few hardwoods, and louvered bifolds cover a closet opening. A slab fits into the existing jamb with the hinges mortised to match; a prehung unit replaces the jamb and casing. When you want to keep the door you have, a metal door grille, one on each side of a cutout near the bottom of the door, adds free area without changing the look much. The one place a louvered door cannot go is between the house and an attached garage, which has to be a rated, solid, self-closing door.

- A photo of the door from the hall with a tape across it, and a note on what is in the room: furnace, water heater, dryer, sump
- Your HVAC contractor's note on the free area needed, if you have one
- Paint color if you want the door finished; painting is a separate line, or paint it yourself

Situations and options
Full-louver door
Louvers top to bottom, the most free area a door can give. The usual pick for a furnace or water heater closet when the HVAC contractor wants the closet open to the house air.
Half-louver door
Louvers in the bottom half, a solid or paneled top. Looks more like the rest of the doors in the house and still moves air; common on laundry rooms and utility rooms.
Louvered bifold
For a furnace or water heater closet with a bifold opening. Full-louver bifold panels on a new track with pivots and a floor bracket, sized to the finished opening.
Grille in your existing door
Keep the door, add the air. A rectangular cutout near the bottom with a metal grille on each side, sized to what the HVAC contractor or inspector called for. Two hours, and the door never comes off the hinges.

Why does a furnace room need a louvered door?
Gas furnaces and water heaters need air for the burners, and a small closet with a solid door does not hold enough. A louvered door opens the closet to the air in the rest of the house so the appliances can draw what they need. Whether louvers alone are enough for your closet, or it needs a duct to the outside as well, is a mechanical question for your HVAC contractor or the inspector; when they say a louvered door or a grille, we install it.
Can a louvered door on the laundry room help with the dryer and the humidity?
Yes. The dryer pulls air out of the room and pushes it outside, and with the door shut it has to pull that air from somewhere; the washer adds moisture the room has to shed. A louvered door lets house air in and the damp air out without leaving the door open. It does not replace a dryer vent that is clogged or too long, and it does not replace a bathroom-style exhaust fan if the room needs one.
Is a louvered door less private or noisier?
Yes to both, by design. A full-louver door passes sound and light along with the air, which is fine on a furnace closet and a laundry room and not what you want on a bedroom. A half-louver door is a middle ground: louvers low where the air moves, solid above. On a laundry room that shares a wall with a bedroom, a half-louver door with the louvers low keeps most of the washer noise down.
Full louver or half louver?
Full louver when the free area matters most, which is a furnace or water heater closet. Half louver when the room needs some air and you want the door to look like the others in the house, which is most laundry and utility rooms. If your HVAC contractor gave you a free-area number, that decides it; a full-louver door gives more than a half.
Can you add a vent grille to my existing door instead of replacing it?
Yes. A door grille is a rectangular metal grille on each side of a cutout, usually near the bottom of the door. We mark the cutout from the grille, cut through the door with it on the hinges, seal the edges and screw both grilles on. Two hours. It gives less free area than a full-louver door, so it is the pick when the HVAC contractor's number is small or you want to keep the door.
Do louvered doors come prehung?
Yes. Full-louver and half-louver doors come as slabs and as prehung units in the standard widths, and louvered bifolds come as sets with the track. A slab fits into your existing jamb and keeps the casing; a prehung unit replaces the jamb and casing and is the pick when the old jamb is damaged.
