Dog Scratched Door Repair — Door, Casing and Jamb
The dog wants out, and the bottom of the door, the casing and the jamb show it.

Dog scratched door repair depends on how deep the damage goes. Light scratches on a painted door are filled, sanded and primed; gouged or chewed doors, casing and jambs get new parts matched to the rest of the house. JMB Builders does it across the Twin Cities metro and can add a kick plate or clear panel so it does not happen again. Priced per door, with a reply to your photos within one business day.
- Priced per door
- Fill, splice or replace — door, casing, jamb
- Kick plate or clear panel to protect it

A dog that wants out works the same spot every day: the lower half of the door near the latch, the casing beside it, the jamb edge, and sometimes a chewed bottom corner. On a painted door the scratches cut through the paint into the skin. On a hollow core door they can go through it. On a steel door they leave dents and bare metal that will rust. On stained wood they cut through the finish into the wood.
Shallow scratches on painted wood or primed hardboard fill and sand like any other damage. Deep gouges in a hollow core skin, chewed casing and chewed jamb edges are faster and cleaner to replace: a new slab matched and hung in the existing jamb, a casing leg replaced with the profile matched, a jamb section spliced in. Stained doors and trim are harder, because new wood has to be stained to match old wood, and an exact match is not something anyone can promise.
Then protect it from the next round: a kick plate or a clear protective panel on the lower part of the door, a guard on the casing edge, or a pet door so the dog stops asking. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

What JMB supplies
- Filler, sanding and primer for scratched painted surfaces
- A replacement slab matched and hung in the existing jamb when the door is too far gone

- Kick plate or clear protective panel installed on the door

How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Surface scratches vs. gouges and chewing
- Door only vs. door, casing and jamb
- Painted vs. stained wood that has to be color matched
- Interior door vs. a steel exterior door with bare metal
- Matching an older or discontinued casing profile
- Type of protector: metal kick plate or clear panel
- How many doors on the same visit
Send a close-up of the worst spot and one photo of the whole door with its casing. That shows fill, splice or replace.
How long it takes
One door with its casing: about half a day. Longer when a slab or a casing profile has to be ordered, or a stain has to be matched.

Situations and options
Fill and prime
For scratches through the paint but not through the door. Filled, sanded smooth and primed, ready to paint. Works on painted wood and primed hardboard doors.
Replace the damaged parts
A new slab hung in the existing jamb, a casing leg replaced with a matched profile, or a chewed jamb edge spliced. Cleaner than rebuilding a chewed edge with filler.
Protect it
A metal kick plate or a clear protective panel on the lower part of the door, or a pet door so the dog has its own way out. Added on the same visit.
Dog Scratched Door Repair — Door, Casing and Jamb: questions, answered
Can dog scratches on a door be fixed without replacing it?
Yes, when they go through the paint but not through the door. The scratches are filled, sanded smooth and primed, then painted. Deep gouges through a hollow core skin or a chewed edge are better replaced.
How do you fix a door chewed by a dog?
A chewed bottom corner or edge on a hollow core door usually means a new slab, matched for style and size and hung in the existing jamb. A chewed solid wood door can sometimes be repaired with a wood dutchman glued in and shaped. We decide from a close-up photo.
Can you repair dog scratches on door trim and casing?
Light scratches on painted casing fill and prime. Chewed or deeply gouged casing gets a new leg in the same profile, cut in at the corner and caulked. A chewed jamb edge gets a spliced section glued and fastened to the old jamb.
What can I put on a door to protect it from dog scratches?
A metal kick plate or a clear protective panel across the lower part of the door takes the scratching instead of the door. A guard on the casing edge protects the trim. Some owners add a pet door so the dog stops scratching to go out.
Can you fix dog scratches on a steel exterior door?
Light scratches can be sanded, primed and painted so the bare metal does not rust. Deep dents and gouges do not fill well on steel and may mean a new slab or door. A kick plate on the inside face stops the next round.
Will a repaired stained door match the rest of the trim?
It can be close, but new wood takes stain differently from wood that has aged for years, and an exact match is not something anyone can promise. On a stained door, replacing the whole casing leg or the whole slab usually looks better than a patch in the middle.
