Original stained doors are worth keeping when they can be kept. In the early-1900s homes near the old downtown of Sauk Rapids, many interior doors are solid wood panel doors with stained casing around them. When one has warped or cracked, a new slab can be stained to sit near the others and fitted to the original jamb, so the casing never comes off.

Mid-century and newer homes are simpler: pull the old prehung unit, set a new one, case it. Many owners use the swap to move from hollow-core to solid-core, or to put a pair of French doors on a den or office. Painting or staining the new doors is quoted separately, or they are left primed for you.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • A photo of each door, open and closed, and the room it serves
  • Doors you bought from Menards, Home Depot or a lumberyard, with the label
  • Knobs, levers and hinges, or tell us what you want and we quote them
  • The stain or paint color for new doors

What JMB supplies

  • A per-door plan: rehang, new slab in the old jamb, or full prehung unit
  • Slabs measured to the jamb, mortised for hinges and bored for the latch
  • Prehung units shimmed, fastened through the shims and cased
  • Stain samples on scrap beside the old doors before finishing
  • Strikes and stops set so each door closes quietly and latches
  • Old doors and jambs hauled away
  • Photos of the finished doors in your job folder
  • Painting or staining, quoted as its own line

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Rehang, slab in an old jamb, or a full prehung replacement
  • Odd-size openings in older homes that need a slab cut to fit
  • Stain-matched doors vs. primed doors for paint
  • Hollow-core, solid-core, panel or French doors
  • Closet doors on the same visit
  • Hardware: reused, or new knobs, levers and hinges

Tell us which doors bother you and why: rubbing, not latching, damaged or just dated. A photo of the top and latch-side gaps shows most of it.

How long it takes

Two to four prehung doors go in per day; slabs in older jambs take longer each. Ten to fifteen doors is usually two to four days, booked as full days near St. Cloud and Sartell.

How your project works

  1. 1

    Sort the doors

From your photos we sort each door into rehang, new slab in the old jamb, or full prehung replacement, and price each one.

  2. 2

    Order to the opening

Openings in older homes are often not stock sizes, so slabs are measured to the jamb and ordered or cut to fit.

  3. 3

    Hang, case, adjust

Each door is shimmed and fastened, cased, and the strike and stops set so it closes quietly and latches. Then we walk every door with you.

Interior Door Installation in Sauk Rapids, MN: questions, answered

Can a new door match the stained doors in my older Sauk Rapids home?

Close, not identical. We pick a slab with the same panel layout and a wood that takes stain like the originals, then test the stain on a scrap beside the old doors. A century of aging is hard to copy exactly, so you see the sample before the door is finished.

My old interior door won't latch. Do I need a new one?

Usually not. A door that will not latch has typically sagged on loose hinges, or the frame has shifted. Tightening or resetting the hinges, moving the strike plate or planing the latch edge fixes most of them for far less than a new door.

Can you put French doors on a den or office in Sauk Rapids?

Yes. Interior French doors come as a prehung pair and need an opening wide enough for both. If the opening is narrower, it has to be widened and reframed, and if the wall is bearing, the new header is sized by an engineer. Glass doors close off the room and still let light through.

Can you replace closet doors at the same time?

Yes. Bifold, bypass and swinging closet doors are priced per opening alongside the bedroom doors. Doing them on the same visit keeps the style consistent and costs less per door than a separate trip.

Do you install doors bought at a big-box store in Sauk Rapids?

Yes. We install doors you bought from Menards, Home Depot or a lumberyard for labor only. Check the size, swing and jamb width before buying, or send a photo of the label and the opening and we check it for you.

How long does it take to replace every interior door in a house?

Two to four prehung doors go in per day, and slabs in older jambs take longer each. Ten to fifteen doors usually takes two to four days. Sauk Rapids work is booked as full days with other jobs near St. Cloud and Sartell, so the whole house is done in one stretch.
