A dining room whose wainscoting stops where a wall was moved, a back entry that needs something tougher than paint, or a half-story bedroom with odd angled walls.

A board and batten wall in Minneapolis, MN usually goes on plaster, not drywall. JMB Builders finds the studs through the lath, scribes boards to walls that bow, and keeps the cap rail level when the floor is not. We also extend or repair original wainscoting so the new run matches the old. Priced per wall. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per wall
  • Fastened through plaster into studs
  • Original wainscoting extended to match

Most walls in older Minneapolis houses are plaster on wood lath. A stud finder reads lath as solid almost everywhere, so we locate studs by the nails in the base and casing, test holes behind where battens will land, and use fasteners long enough to reach framing through the plaster. Adhesive alone does not hold on old painted plaster. Plaster also bows, so boards are scribed to the wall instead of pulled tight and cracking it.

Some of these houses already have wainscoting, paneled or plain board below a plate rail, and a remodel ended it in the middle of a wall or tore out a section. Extending it means building the same stile and rail widths, the same cap, and a new section that meets the old one at an inside corner or a doorway, where a joint looks intentional.

Board and batten fits the back entry, the upstairs half-story bedrooms with their angled ceilings, and a basement family room. Neighbors in St. Paul and Crystal ask for the same work. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

How it is priced: per wall

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Wall length and height, and the batten or panel count
  • Plaster walls that bow and need scribing
  • Matching original stained wainscoting vs. new painted work
  • Angled half-story walls and knee walls with more cuts
  • Outlets, radiators, windows and doors in the run
  • Staining to blend with old finish, quoted as its own line

Send each wall straight on with a tape across it and a close-up of any existing wainscoting at its top and bottom edges.

How long it takes

One painted board and batten wall: about a day on plaster. Extending original stained wainscoting around a dining room: two to four days.

Situations and options

Extend original wainscoting

New stiles, rails and cap built to the widths of the old run and joined at a corner or doorway so the room reads as one piece again.

Back entry board and batten

Battens with a hook rail at the side or back door, in pine or PVC where boots and wet coats hit the wall.

Half-story bedroom walls

Battens on the knee walls and gable ends of an upstairs room, laid out so the spacing still works where the ceiling angles down.

Plate rail wainscoting

Plain boards below a plate rail with a groove for plates or frames, a look many bungalow dining rooms were built with.

Board and Batten & Wainscoting in Minneapolis, MN: questions, answered

Can board and batten be installed on plaster walls?

Yes. We find the studs through the lath, drill test holes where battens will cover them, and use nails or screws long enough to reach framing through the plaster. Boards are scribed to the wall so they do not crack it pulling it flat. Adhesive alone is not trusted on old painted plaster.

Can you extend the original wainscoting in my Minneapolis dining room?

Usually. We measure the stiles, rails and cap of the old run and build the new section to the same widths, in the same wood if it is stained. The joint goes at a corner or a doorway where it looks planned. Stain is tested on offcuts so you can pick the closest match.

Does board and batten work on the angled walls of a half-story bedroom?

Yes. The battens run plumb and the top rail follows the knee wall or stops at the slope, depending on the look you want. We lay it out on the wall first so the spacing works on the short and tall sections both.

Should wainscoting be stained or painted in an older Minneapolis house?

Match the room. If the casing and base are stained fir or oak, stained wainscoting belongs with them. In rooms where the trim was painted long ago, painted wainscoting fits. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

How do you keep the cap rail level when the floor slopes?

The cap is run to a level line, not measured up from the floor. The battens or panels are cut to that line, and the base is scribed to the floor below, so the slope disappears into the baseboard instead of showing at the top.

How is a board and batten wall priced in Minneapolis?

Per wall. Size, batten or panel count, plaster that needs scribing, and matching stained original work move the number. Staining or painting is its own line. Your quote comes from photos or a free in-home estimate.
