Board and Batten Wall and Wainscoting in Buffalo, MN

You want a Buffalo room to have some character, a batten wall or wainscot, and you want it to fit the windows and outlets instead of fighting them.

A board and batten wall in Buffalo, MN, or wainscoting with a cap, is planned on the wall before cutting so the spacing comes out even around windows and outlets. JMB Builders installs it in lake homes, 1990s–2010s subdivision houses and basement family rooms, in MDF, pine or PVC where it gets wet. Caulked, filled and primed, and priced per wall from photos or a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per wall
  • Spacing worked out to your wall, not a chart
  • PVC at lake doors and baths

Lake houses in Buffalo usually have a lot of window on the water side, and a batten wall there has to work around big openings. The battens should die into the window casing cleanly, not stop an inch short, so we case the window in the same material and plan the spacing from the window out. At the door people come in from the lake, wainscoting in PVC or beadboard with a cap rail and hooks takes wet towels better than drywall.

In the 1990s to 2010s neighborhoods it is mostly feature walls in a bedroom or office, and the plain hallway that runs past the bedrooms. A finished basement family room is the other common wall: long, low, with a TV on it, and often a bulkhead along the top that the layout has to respect.

Each wall is measured, the spacing worked out so both corners come out the same, and the layout marked for you to see. Outlets get box extenders. It goes up caulked, filled and primed. Paint is quoted as a separate line; leave it primed and caulked if you would rather paint it yourself.

How it is priced: per wall

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Wall size, and full height vs. wainscot with a cap
  • Batten spacing or panel count
  • Large windows that need casing in matching material
  • MDF and pine vs. PVC for wet areas
  • Heavy texture, bulkheads and outlets in the wall

Send each wall straight on, with the length and ceiling height, and point out windows or outlets that furniture hides.

How long it takes

One feature wall: about a day. A hallway or an entry with a hook rail: one to two days. A basement family room wall with a bulkhead: one to two days.

Situations and options

Window wall facing the lake

Battens planned out from a big window, with the window cased in the same material so every batten finishes into the casing.

Beadboard wainscot at the lake door

Beadboard or PVC to a cap rail with hooks, by the door that brings in wet towels and boots.

Basement family room wall

Board and batten behind the TV, with the top rail run under a duct bulkhead so the wall looks planned around it.

Hallway wainscot

Picture-frame panels or flat battens to a chair-height cap along a bedroom hall, sized so each door casing ends a run cleanly.

Board and Batten Wall and Wainscoting in Buffalo, MN: questions, answered

How do you plan board and batten around a big window?

We start the layout at the window, not the corner. The window gets cased in the same material, and the spacing is worked out so a batten lands at each side of the casing and the bays between are equal. A batten that stops short of a window is what makes a wall look unplanned.

What material is best for wainscoting near a door from the lake?

PVC, or pine primed and painted on every face. Both take a wet towel or a dripping life jacket. MDF swells if it stays damp, so we keep it for dry rooms. A cap rail with hooks above the panels keeps wet gear off the wall.

How much does board and batten cost?

It is priced per wall. The size, the spacing, the material and how many windows and outlets are in the wall move the number. No prices are posted here; send photos of the wall and we reply within one business day, or we measure at a free in-home estimate.

Can you put board and batten on a basement wall with a bulkhead?

Yes. The top rail runs along the underside of the bulkhead, or the bulkhead gets its own trim, so the wall reads as planned. If the bulkhead is not level we scribe the rail to it rather than follow a crooked line.

Is a permit needed for wainscoting?

Trim on an existing wall is not usually permitted work. Moving an outlet or adding wiring is done by a licensed electrician and may need a permit. We check with the City of Buffalo building department when a wall needs more than trim.

Yes. We are based in Zimmerman and install board and batten and wainscoting in Buffalo, Annandale, Albertville and across the Twin Cities metro. Photos of the walls get a reply within one business day, or set up a free in-home estimate.
