A board and batten wall in Blaine, MN is how many owners of newer homes add some character to plain painted drywall, and shiplap and wainscoting are the close cousins. JMB Builders, a licensed Minnesota contractor based in Zimmerman, lays out the battens or boards wall by wall, fits them to the windows, outlets and base, and leaves them filled, caulked and primed. Priced per wall; send photos and we reply within one business day.

  • Layout marked on the wall before cutting

Blaine's newer neighborhoods have a lot of houses with smooth drywall, builder base and no trim on the walls at all. That is the best canvas for board and batten: a bedroom wall behind the bed, a home office, a dining area or the hall from the garage. Shiplap goes up the same way for a more horizontal look, and wainscoting to chair-rail or two-thirds height suits a dining room or a hall that takes bumps.

On the older side of the city, 1960s–80s ramblers and split-entries, the walls are often textured and the trim is clamshell. Those walls usually need a skim coat or a thin panel behind the battens to look smooth, and the base on that wall gets replaced so the battens land on something flat.

Either way, we mark the full layout before cutting so the spacing comes out even at each corner and on both sides of a window, and we check the ceiling for dips before setting a top rail. Outlets get box extenders so the covers sit flat. We build accent walls in Coon Rapids and Ham Lake too.

  • Base replaced or built up so the battens land flat
  • Skim coat or a backing panel on textured walls when needed
  • Box extenders at outlets and switches

How it is priced: per wall

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Wall area and height, including tall walls that need staging
  • Board and batten, grid, shiplap or wainscoting
  • Batten count and spacing
  • Smooth new-build drywall vs. textured walls that need a skim coat or panel
  • Windows, doors, outlets and vents in the wall
  • Replacing the base on that wall

Send a straight-on photo of the wall, a close-up of the texture and base, and the length and height.

How long it takes

One accent wall: usually one day. Shiplap on a wall with a window: one to two days. A skim coat adds a day for drying.

Flat panels or battens to chair-rail or two-thirds height with a cap, for a dining area or the hall from the garage.

Board and Batten Wall in Blaine, MN — Shiplap and Wainscoting: questions, answered

Board and batten or shiplap, which looks better in a newer Blaine home?

Both work on the smooth walls most newer homes have. Board and batten reads vertical and a little more formal; shiplap reads horizontal and casual. We can mark both on the wall with tape so you can see them before we cut.

Can you put board and batten on a tall wall?

Yes. Tall walls take longer battens or a joint hidden behind a horizontal rail, and staging to reach the top. We check the ceiling line before setting the top rail, since a long rail shows every dip. Send the height with your photo.

My older Blaine split-entry has textured walls. Can I still do board and batten?

Yes. The texture shows between the battens once it is painted, so the wall gets a skim coat or a thin smooth panel behind the battens. The clamshell base on that wall gets replaced with a flat base too. A close-up photo shows which the wall needs.

What height should wainscoting be in a dining room?

Chair-rail height is the classic choice and protects the wall from chair backs. Two-thirds height looks more modern and works with a cap rail used as a ledge. We mark the line on the wall so you see the proportion before we start.

Do you install accent walls in Coon Rapids and Ham Lake too?

Yes. JMB Builders is a licensed Minnesota contractor based in Zimmerman, and we build board and batten, shiplap and wainscoting in Blaine, Coon Rapids, Ham Lake and across the Twin Cities metro.

Do you paint the wall when it is done?

We can. Every wall is left filled, caulked and primed, and painting is quoted as a separate line. Or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
