Most attached and detached garages built in the last few decades have a roof of engineered trusses. A truss is designed for a set load on its bottom chord, and many garage trusses were designed for a drywall ceiling and nothing else. Stack plywood and a winter's worth of bins on them and the ceiling below can sag or crack.
So the first step is to find out what the trusses were built to carry. The truss tag or the original truss drawings name the maker and the design; the truss maker or an engineer confirms whether a storage floor is OK and, if the trusses need it, how to reinforce them. Nothing gets decked until that answer is in hand.
Once the loading is confirmed, the storage area is decked in the center bays where there is headroom, the web members are left whole, and a pull-down attic ladder or a scuttle with a fixed ladder gets you up there. A light in the attic is wired by a licensed electrician.

Situations and options
Decked storage over existing trusses
When the truss maker or engineer confirms the trusses carry a storage load, decking goes on the bottom chords in the center bays and an attic ladder goes in. The fastest option.
Reinforced trusses
When the trusses were built for a ceiling only, the truss maker or an engineer can design a repair, often added lumber along the chords. The reinforcement is done to their letter before any decking.
Rafters and ceiling joists
Older garages framed with rafters and ceiling joists instead of trusses can often be decked, but joist size and span still decide it. An engineer confirms the load before decking.

Can I put a storage floor over my garage trusses?
Sometimes. It depends on what load the trusses were designed for, and many garage trusses were built to carry a ceiling and nothing more. The truss maker or an engineer can confirm it from the truss tag or drawings. If they say the trusses need reinforcing, that is done before any decking goes down.
How much weight can garage trusses hold?
It depends on the truss design, and there is no safe general answer. The truss maker or an engineer confirms the allowable storage load from the truss tag, drawings or a look at the trusses. JMB Builders does not deck a garage attic on a guess.
Can you cut truss webs to make more storage room?
No. Every web in a truss is part of how it carries the roof, and cutting one can weaken the whole truss. Storage goes between the webs in the center bays where there is headroom. Any change to a truss is designed by the truss maker or an engineer.
What kind of decking goes on a garage attic floor?
Plywood or OSB screwed to the bottom chords of the trusses, cut to land on chords at every edge. Screws hold better than nails and do not pound on the ceiling below. The decked area stays in the bays where the loading was confirmed.
Do I need an attic ladder for garage attic storage?
A pull-down attic ladder is the easiest way to get bins up and down. It needs a framed opening between the trusses, sized so no truss is cut. In an attached garage the ladder and opening also have to keep the fire separation between the garage and the house.
Does a heated garage change how the attic storage floor is built?
Yes. A heated garage has insulation on the ceiling, and decking right on top of it crushes it. The storage area is kept small or raised, and the insulation around it is kept at full depth so the garage does not lose heat.
