The 400 Series is Andersen's flagship and, by Andersen's account, the best-selling wood window and patio door line in America. It pairs a wood interior with a low-maintenance Perma-Shield® vinyl exterior and offers seven exterior colors, natural pine plus three interior colors, up to nine hardware finishes and a full grille catalog. In April 2026 Andersen added all-black options: black components on the Tilt-Wash Double-Hung and black sills and hardware on patio doors.
In our climate the 400 Series earns its reputation on performance. Andersen offers Low-E4®, SmartSun™, HeatLock®, Sun and PassiveSun® glass. In 2024 Andersen launched a triple-pane option for 400 Series windows in Northeast states (dual Low-E4 or Low-E4 with HeatLock); whether it can be ordered in Minnesota varies, so we confirm at the estimate. The Tilt-Wash Double-Hung can be ordered with Andersen's factory-applied Energy Performance Panel to meet ENERGY STAR® version 7.0 in the Northern zone.
The Frenchwood® gliding and hinged patio doors are among the premium patio doors we install most often, and the Woodwright® double-hung gives a traditional profile for older Twin Cities homes.

Insulation and energy performance in Minnesota
A wood frame with a vinyl exterior gives the 400 Series a low-conductivity frame, and the glass menu is Andersen's deepest below the architectural lines. For Minnesota, order Low-E4 SmartSun or Low-E4 with HeatLock, add the Energy Performance Panel on tilt-wash double-hungs if you want Northern-zone ENERGY STAR 7.0 numbers, and ask whether triple-pane can be ordered here; north-facing rooms can use PassiveSun to pick up free winter heat.
Glass packages
- Low-E4® dual-pane with argon (standard)
- Low-E4® SmartSun™: adds solar-heat control and filters about 95% of UV
- HeatLock® room-side coating: reflects heat back into the room; Andersen's best dual-pane U-factors
- PassiveSun® glass: higher solar gain for cold climates and shaded exposures
- Sun glass: tinted, blocks the most solar heat
- Triple-pane with dual Low-E4® coatings, or Low-E4® with HeatLock®, in markets where Andersen offers it (launched in the Northeast in 2024)
- Energy Performance Panel: factory-applied to Tilt-Wash Double-Hung units to meet ENERGY STAR® 7.0 in the Northern zone
Frame and sash
Solid wood frame and sash with Perma-Shield® rigid vinyl cladding on the exterior; Andersen describes the line as wood inside and vinyl outside. Weatherstripping is factory-applied at all sash perimeters, and Frenchwood® doors use a weatherstripped interlock at the meeting stile.
Ratings
ENERGY STAR® certified options across the line with the right glass. Andersen states the factory-applied Energy Performance Panel lets 400 Series Tilt-Wash Double-Hung windows meet ENERGY STAR version 7.0 in the Northern zone, and its triple-pane option is aimed at ENERGY STAR 7.0, stretch codes and passive-house goals. Unit U-factors are on the NFRC label and in Andersen's product guide.
What the install adds
On install day we set the unit on a sloped sill pan, tape the flanges or brickmould to the housewrap with flashing tape, fill the rough-opening gap with low-expansion foam, and seal the interior with backer rod and sealant before trim goes on. The exterior joint gets backer rod and sealant too, so the rating on the label is what the wall actually gets.
