Stucco is a hard cement skin over lath and paper. It does not flex, it does not come off in pieces like siding, and water that gets behind it stays there. That is why windows in stucco houses need a plan before anything is cut. Pry too hard on the old frame and the stucco cracks a foot away.
When the frames are sound, an insert is the cleanest choice: the stucco and exterior trim stay, and the new window seals inside the old frame. When a frame is rotted or leaking into the wall, the stucco is cut back with a saw in a clean line, the window comes out, the new unit is flashed to the wall paper, and the stucco is patched and textured. A patch can be close in color but rarely a perfect match, so we talk through where it will show.

Stucco cut back around the opening, old window out, new unit flashed to the wall, then the stucco rebuilt in coats and textured. For rotted or leaking openings.
Stucco-friendly exterior trim
New PVC or wood trim set with a sealant joint to the stucco, and a drip cap over the head so water sheds clear of the window.

Can you replace windows in a stucco house without damaging the stucco?
Yes, with an insert. The new window goes into the old frame and the stucco is not touched. When a frame is rotted and has to come out, the stucco is cut back in a clean line and patched, so the damage is controlled rather than cracked.
Will the stucco patch around my new window match?
Texture can be matched closely. Color is harder, because old stucco has weathered and new stucco cures differently. If a close match is not enough, painting the wall or the whole side evens it out; we talk through it at the measure.
Why do windows in stucco houses leak?
Usually the flashing under the stucco was never lapped right at the sill, or the caulk joint between the window and the stucco failed. Water gets behind the stucco and has no way out. A full frame replacement lets us flash the opening properly.
Is insert or full frame better in a stucco house?
Insert, when the frame is sound, because it avoids cutting the stucco. Full frame, when the frame is rotted or water is getting into the wall. We check each opening; a house can have a mix.
How long does stucco window replacement take?
Inserts run three to five a day. Full frame openings in stucco run one or two a day, with a return visit to finish the stucco once the base coats cure. The window is weathertight the first day.
Do you replace rotted wood trim on a stucco house at the same time?
Yes. Rotted exterior casing and sills are replaced as part of the window job, set with a sealant joint to the stucco. If the windows are fine and only the trim is rotted, that is a separate, smaller repair.
