Horizontal sliders are all over ranch houses, split-levels and basements built from the 1960s on. They wear in a predictable way: rollers flatten, the bottom track fills with grit, the sash sags, and the interlock between the two sashes opens a gap that whistles in January. Aluminum sliders from that era also sweat and frost on the frame itself.
A slider has to sit dead level or the sash rolls open by itself or fights you closing it. We check the sill with a level at the measure, shim the new unit flat across its width, and test the roll and latch before the foam goes in.

- Your paint or stain color for new trim — Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

Situations and options
Two-lite slider
One fixed sash, one that slides. Choose which side operates for each opening; it is marked at the measure and ordered that way.
Three-lite (end-vent) slider
A wide fixed center with sliding sashes at each end. Common in living rooms and long bedroom openings where a single slider would be too heavy to move.
Slider to casement
Same opening, crank-out windows instead. Tighter seal in wind and a larger clear opening per sash, with a mullion where the two casements meet.

Why is my sliding window so hard to open?
Most of the time the rollers under the sash are worn flat or the track is packed with dirt, and sometimes the sash itself has sagged. Cleaning the track and replacing the rollers can fix a newer unit. On an old aluminum or worn vinyl slider, the frame is usually the problem and replacement is the lasting fix.
Are sliding windows drafty?
Sliders seal with brush weatherstrip at the interlock, which leaks more air than a casement's compression seal. A new slider installed level and sealed is far tighter than a worn one. If drafts are the main complaint, ask us to price casements in the same openings.
Can I replace a bedroom slider with a smaller window?
A bedroom window often has to meet egress rules for escape in a fire, which set a minimum clear opening and a maximum sill height. We check that before ordering so the new window keeps the room legal. A slider's clear opening is only one sash wide, so some bedrooms are better served with a casement.
Which side of a sliding window should open?
Usually the side closest to where you stand to open it, or the side away from a corner or furniture. It can differ window to window. We mark it at the measure so each unit is ordered right.
Do you replace old aluminum sliding windows?
Yes. Aluminum frames conduct cold, so they frost and sweat and often rot the wood sill underneath. We remove the aluminum frame, repair the sill, and install a new vinyl or composite slider with the trim finished inside and out.
How long does sliding window replacement take?
Insert sliders run three to five a day. Full-frame units with new exterior trim take longer, one to three a day. Each window is closed up the same day it is opened.
