People switch from casements for a few reasons: the crank operators keep failing, the sash swings out into a walkway or deck, or they want a traditional look with a screen on the inside that stays put. A double hung can go in the same opening, but not every casement opening is a good double hung opening.
Width is the first check. Casements are often narrow and tall or grouped in pairs; a single wide casement opening may need two double hungs mulled together. The second check is egress. A casement opens its full width, while a double hung opens only half its height. A bedroom casement that met egress may not meet it as a double hung the same size, and that has to be settled before anything is ordered.
Once the sizes work, it is a normal replacement: old casements out, the opening checked for rot, the new double hungs set in a sill pan or inside the old frame, foamed, sealed and trimmed. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

One casement to one double hung
A tall, narrow casement opening that takes a single double hung. The simplest swap; interior trim can often stay with an insert.
Wide casement to mulled double hungs
A wide opening becomes two double hungs joined side by side with a mull, trimmed as one unit inside and out.
Keep casements in bedrooms
If a double hung cannot meet egress in a bedroom opening, keeping a casement there or enlarging the opening are the options. We point it out before ordering.

Can you replace casement windows with double hung windows?
Yes, in most openings. The double hung is ordered to the casement opening size, and wide openings may take two mulled units. Bedroom windows need an egress check first, because a double hung opens only half its height.
Will a double hung still meet egress in my bedroom?
Not always. A casement opens its full width, so it meets egress with a smaller frame than a double hung does. We measure the clear opening the new window would give; if it falls short, you keep a casement there or enlarge the opening.
Why do people switch from casement to double hung windows?
Crank operators and hinges wear out, casements swing into decks and walkways, and some people prefer the look of a double hung. Double hungs also keep the screen outside the sash, where it is not in the way of the crank.
Is a double hung as airtight as a casement?
Casements usually seal a little tighter because the sash presses against the weatherstrip when locked. A good double hung installed square with foam and sealed joints is not drafty. We can show you the ratings for the units you are considering.
Does the interior trim have to change when switching styles?
Not always. If the old frame is sound, a double hung insert can set inside it and the casing stays. In a full-frame install, or where two units are mulled, the trim is replaced.
How long does it take to change casements to double hungs?
One to three full-frame windows a day once the windows arrive; inserts go faster. Mulled units in wide openings take longer. Each opening is closed up the same day.
