Egress Window Installation in Plymouth, MN

You are turning part of a Plymouth basement into a bedroom or office, and the window down there is too small and too high to climb out of.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

Egress window installation in Plymouth covers two kinds of basements: block-wall lower levels under 1960s–70s homes in the older lake neighborhoods, and deep poured basements under 1990s–2000s two-stories. JMB Builders cuts or enlarges the opening, sets the window and well, trims the inside to match the room and pulls the permit with the City of Plymouth. Each window is priced on its own: send photos for a quote, or have us out for a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per window
  • Block or poured wall, cut and headered
  • City of Plymouth permit pulled

Plymouth's older sections, around Medicine Lake and the 1960s–70s neighborhoods, have basements with concrete block walls and small windows near the ceiling. The newer west-side two-stories from the 1990s–2000s sit on taller poured walls, and a lot of them were left unfinished for the owners to do later. Either way, a basement bedroom needs a code-size escape window and a well in front of it.

Block and poured walls are cut differently. A block wall is cut to the opening, the cut cores are filled and a header is set over it where the wall needs one. A poured wall is cut with a wet saw from both sides and comes out in pieces. On a deep poured basement the well is deeper too, which can mean steps or a ladder in the well so someone can actually get out.

Plymouth basements also tend to be finished with care, so the inside matters. We match the window's casing to the trim already in the room, stained or painted. Most cities require a permit for a new or larger foundation opening; we check with the City of Plymouth building department and pull it. Our job records show three installs in Plymouth between April and September 2026.

  • Header over the opening where the wall needs one
  • Treated buck, egress window, sill pan, flashing, foam and sealant

How it is priced: per window

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Block vs. poured wall, and wall thickness
  • Depth of the cut and the well, and whether the well needs steps or a ladder
  • Enlarging the existing window vs. a new opening in solid wall
  • Landscaping, patio or deck in the way of the dig
  • Matching stained or custom casing inside vs. a standard profile
  • Permit fee set by the city

Send a photo of the wall inside and outside, a close-up of the existing trim in the room, and whether the wall is block or poured if you know.

How long it takes

Most single egress windows: two to three days from dig to trim, then the city inspection. The opening is closed in on the day it is cut.

Situations and options

Block wall in an older lake-area home

The opening is cut in the block, cores filled, a header set where the wall needs one, and the window set on a treated buck. The inside is trimmed to match the room's older casing.

Deep poured wall in a 1990s two-story

A taller cut and a deeper well. Deep wells need a way to climb out, so we set steps or a ladder in the well.

Stained trim to match

Where the rest of the basement has stained casing, the egress window gets the same species and profile where we can source it, so it does not look added later.

Egress Window Installation in Plymouth, MN: questions, answered

Do I need a permit for an egress window in Plymouth?

Most cities require a building permit to cut or enlarge an opening in a foundation wall, and a basement bedroom is inspected. We check with the City of Plymouth building department for your address and pull the permit. The fee goes on the quote.

Can you cut an egress window in a concrete block basement wall?

Yes. Older Plymouth homes often have block basements. The block is cut to the opening, the hollow cores at the cut are filled, and a header goes over the top where the wall needs one. Then the window is set on a treated buck and sealed.

What if my Plymouth basement is very deep?

A deeper basement means a deeper well. When the well is deep, code requires a way to climb out, so the well gets built-in steps or a ladder. We size the well to the depth before we order it.

Can the egress window trim match the rest of my finished basement?

Yes. We case the new window to match the room: stained wood where the room is stained, painted where it is painted, in the same profile where we can get it. Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and finish it yourself.

Does an egress window help when I sell my Plymouth home?

A basement room is listed as a bedroom only when it has a legal escape opening. The permit and final inspection are the record that it does. Buyers and appraisers in Plymouth notice that paperwork.
