Tile is cold. In Minnesota it is cold for six months. An electric heating mat under the tile fixes that for a bathroom, a mudroom or an entry, and the time to do it is when the floor is being tiled anyway, because the mat goes in between the subfloor prep and the tile.
The system is a resistance cable, either woven into a mat or clipped into the studs of an uncoupling membrane, with a floor sensor and a wall thermostat. The cable cannot be cut or overlapped, so the layout is planned around the toilet, the vanity and the tub before anything is stuck down. We test the cable's resistance when it comes out of the box, again after it is laid, and again after the tile is set, so a damaged cable is caught before it is buried.
The electrical side — the dedicated circuit, the thermostat box, the connection at the panel — is done by a licensed electrician. We rough in the conduit for the sensor and the cold lead so the electrician's visit is short.

Situations and options
Heating mat
Cable pre-spaced on a mesh mat that rolls out and is cut and turned to fit. Fastest on a rectangular floor. Set in thinset, then tiled over with a second layer of thinset.
Cable in an uncoupling membrane
Loose cable snapped into a studded membrane that also uncouples the tile from the subfloor. Fits around a toilet and a curved tub better than a mat, and the membrane handles the movement a wood subfloor makes.
Bathroom floor
The most common use. Heat in front of the vanity, the toilet and the tub, none under the fixtures. Sensor set where you stand, thermostat by the door.
Mudroom and entry
Warm tile where boots come off, and a floor that dries snowmelt faster. Cable spaced a little tighter near the door if the maker allows it.

Do I need an electrician for a heated tile floor?
Yes. The heating cable connects to a thermostat on a circuit, often a dedicated one, and that connection is licensed electrical work. We lay and test the cable and run the sensor and lead wires to the thermostat box. A licensed electrician makes the connections at the thermostat and the panel. We bring one in or coordinate with yours.
Can heated floor be added under an existing tile floor?
Not without removing the tile. The cable has to sit under the tile in thinset. If you like the existing tile, the answer is no; if the floor is due for replacement anyway, this is the time. The other option is heat from below, between the joists, which only works with basement access and a different system.
Does electric floor heat warm the whole bathroom?
It is floor warming, not the main heat source. It takes the chill off the tile and warms the room a bit, but the furnace still does the heating. Most people run it on a schedule so the floor is warm in the morning and off during the day.
How much does a heated floor raise the floor height?
A little. The mat or membrane plus the thinset that covers it adds a small amount over a plain tile floor. It usually means a slightly taller transition at the door and, once in a while, trimming the bottom of the door. We plan for that when we set the transition.
What happens if the heating cable is damaged during tiling?
That is why we test it three times. If the resistance reading changes after the mat is laid or after the tile is set, we know before the grout goes in. A nicked cable can usually be located and spliced with a repair kit under one tile. Once the floor is grouted and tested good, the cable is protected under the tile and rarely fails.
Can a heated floor go under vinyl plank instead of tile?
Some systems are rated for floating floors like LVP and laminate, using a different mat that goes over the subfloor under the planks. The plank maker has to allow it too. Tile holds and spreads the heat better, which is why bathrooms get tile. If you want warm LVP, ask, and we will check the products you have in mind.
