A wired video doorbell runs on the same two low-voltage wires the old button did, but it draws more than a button. The transformer in most older Twin Cities homes is small, and the doorbell either will not charge or drops offline every evening. We check the transformer output before we start, and if it is too weak we replace it with one rated for the camera when it is at the chime or in an accessible spot. When the transformer is inside the electrical panel, a licensed electrician swaps it.
The mount is the other half. The doorbell has to be level, at a height that sees a face and a package, and angled toward the walk with a wedge or corner kit when the door is set back in a recess. On brick or stucco the base is anchored, not screwed into mortar, and the wire hole is sealed so water does not follow it into the wall.
Battery doorbells skip the wiring but still need a good mount and a spot you can reach to charge. Either way, adding the doorbell to your Wi-Fi and phone app is yours; we leave it powered, mounted and ready for the app.

How long it takes
Wired doorbell on existing wires: about an hour. With a transformer swap at the chime or a masonry mount: two hours. Electrician's visit for a panel transformer is scheduled separately.

Situations and options
Wired doorbell on existing wires
Old button off, wires landed on the new doorbell, chime kit installed at the chime, unit mounted and powered. The standard job when the transformer checks out.
Transformer upgrade
A transformer rated for the doorbell camera in place of the small one at the chime, furnace or a junction box. When the transformer lives inside the electrical panel, a licensed electrician replaces it and it goes on the quote as their line.
Doorbell camera on brick or stucco
Base anchored into the brick face or stucco with plugs, not the mortar. The wire hole is drilled once, sealed, and the base sits flat on a mounting plate when the surface is rough.
No existing doorbell wires
A battery doorbell on a mount, or a plug-in transformer adapter inside the nearest room with new bell wire fished to the door. Which one depends on the door and how often you want to charge it.

Can you install a Ring doorbell on my existing doorbell wiring?
Yes, in most houses. The two bell wires behind the old button power the doorbell and ring your existing chime. We check the transformer first; Ring and Nest list a minimum output and older transformers often fall short. If it is weak, we replace it when it is reachable, and the doorbell charges and stays online. The Ring app setup is yours once it is powered.
Why does my video doorbell keep going offline or not charging?
Nine times out of ten the transformer is too small for the camera. The doorbell runs on its internal battery, drains it faster than the wires can recharge it, and drops offline. A transformer rated for the doorbell fixes it. A bad splice, corroded bell wire, or a chime that needs the maker's bypass kit are the other causes, and we check all three.
Where is the doorbell transformer in my house?
Usually screwed to the chime box, to the side of the furnace, to a junction box in the basement ceiling, or inside the electrical panel. Follow the thin bell wire from the chime and it ends at the transformer. If it is at the chime or on a box, we replace it. If it is inside the panel, a licensed electrician does the swap and we arrange it.
Can a video doorbell be mounted on brick?
Yes. We drill into the brick face, not the mortar, set plastic anchors or use the maker's masonry plate, and seal the wire hole so water does not follow the wire inside. A wedge behind the base keeps it flat and angled at the walk when the brick is rough or the door is recessed.
Do you set up the doorbell app and Wi-Fi?
No. We leave the doorbell wired, mounted and charging, and confirm the chime rings. Adding it to your Wi-Fi and phone app takes a few minutes in the maker's app and is yours to do. If the doorbell is out of Wi-Fi range at the front door, a range extender or a router move is the fix, not a wiring one.
What if there are no doorbell wires at my door?
Two choices. A battery doorbell on a mount, which you charge every few months. Or a plug-in doorbell transformer in the nearest room with bell wire fished through the wall or trim to the door, so a wired doorbell charges all the time. Send a photo of the door and the wall inside it and we tell you which is practical.
