A video doorbell draws a trickle of power through the chime all the time to keep its battery up. A mechanical chime, the kind with two metal bars and a plunger, handles that only if the doorbell maker's chime kit or power kit is wired across the chime terminals. Skip the kit and the chime hums, rings weakly, rings on its own or the doorbell never charges. Most calls about a chime that quit are a missing or mis-wired kit.
Digital chimes, the ones that play a melody, are the other cause. Many of them will not work with a video doorbell at all, or only with a specific kit. The fix is a mechanical chime in the same spot on the same wires, which is about an hour, or a plug-in chime that pairs with the doorbell over Wi-Fi and skips the bell wiring entirely.
Under all of it is the transformer. If it is too small for the doorbell, no chime kit saves it. We test the voltage at the chime first, replace the transformer when it is at the chime, the furnace or a junction box, and bring in a licensed electrician when it lives inside the electrical panel.

Chime kit on the existing mechanical chime
The doorbell maker's small kit or power module wired across the front and trans terminals inside the chime. Fixes the hum, the weak ring and the doorbell that will not charge on a chime that is otherwise fine.
Digital chime replaced with mechanical
The melody chime comes off and a two-note mechanical chime goes on the same wires, with the kit installed. The reliable fix when the digital chime will not ring with the doorbell.
Plug-in wireless chime
The doorbell maker's plug-in chime in an outlet where you want to hear it, paired to the doorbell over Wi-Fi. No chime wiring, and it works for battery doorbells with no wires at all. Adds a second ring point upstairs too.
Transformer upgrade
A transformer rated for the doorbell replaces the small one at the chime, furnace or junction box. Inside the electrical panel it becomes a licensed electrician's line on the quote.

Why did my doorbell chime stop working after installing a Ring doorbell?
Because the video doorbell pulls power through the chime circuit constantly, and the chime needs the maker's chime kit or power kit across its terminals to handle that. Without it the chime hums, rings faintly or goes silent, and the doorbell may not charge. Installing the kit at the chime fixes it in most houses; a digital melody chime may need to be swapped for a mechanical one.
Does a Nest doorbell work with a mechanical chime?
Yes, with its chime connector wired at the chime. Nest, Ring, Eufy and Arlo each ship a small module for this, and it goes across the chime terminals, not at the door. Mechanical chimes are the sure thing; digital chimes are hit or miss, and when one does not work the mechanical swap is quick.
Can I replace a digital doorbell chime with a mechanical one?
Yes. The same three wires (front, trans, and rear if there is a back door button) land on the mechanical chime's terminals, the doorbell's kit goes on, and the cover goes back. It takes about an hour. Mechanical chimes come in plain covers and in wood or metal ones if the old chime was part of the decor.
My doorbell chime hums or buzzes all the time; what is wrong?
The video doorbell is trickle-charging through the chime coil and the chime kit is missing or wired wrong. A plunger held partly in by that current hums, and it burns out the chime over time. The kit routes that current around the coil. If the hum stays after the kit, the transformer is usually undersized and we check it next.
Can I just use a plug-in chime instead of fixing the wired one?
Yes. Ring, Nest and others sell a plug-in chime that pairs with the doorbell over Wi-Fi. It goes in any outlet, rings wherever you put it and does not touch the bell wires. It is the answer for battery doorbells and for a chime box that is buried behind a remodel. The wired chime can be left disconnected.
Do you fix doorbell wiring or is that an electrician?
Doorbell wiring is low voltage and we handle it: the chime, the kit, the bell wire and a transformer that is at the chime, furnace or a junction box. When the transformer is inside the electrical panel, a licensed electrician replaces it and we arrange that. Anything on the house's line-voltage side is theirs.
