Most camera ads assume Wi-Fi and a cloud subscription. On acreage, the barn or shop is often past the reach of the house Wi-Fi, and some farms have no internet at all. A camera still works without internet as long as it records somewhere. There are three ways to do that, and the right one depends on whether the building has power and whether you need to see it live from your phone.
Local recording: PoE cameras cabled to an NVR (a small recorder with a hard drive) in the shop or the house. Everything records around the clock, and you watch it on a monitor plugged into the NVR, no internet needed. If internet is added later, the same NVR can be viewed on a phone. SD-card cameras are the simpler version: each camera records to its own card.
No power and no internet: cellular cameras with a solar panel send clips over a cell data plan, like a trail camera, and need decent cell signal at that spot. Battery life drops in a Minnesota January, so the panel has to face south with no shade. We mount and aim what you choose; the data plan is set up by you with the camera's carrier.

Situations and options
PoE cameras to an NVR
Cameras cabled to a recorder with a hard drive in the shop or house. Records everything, no subscription, no internet needed; watch it on a monitor at the NVR. The most reliable choice when the building has power.
SD-card cameras
Each camera records to its own memory card and plugs into an outlet. Simple and cheap, but you pull the card or connect locally to see footage, and a stolen camera takes its card with it.
Cellular and solar cameras
For a gate, field entrance or building with no power: a camera with a solar panel sends clips over the cell network. Needs cell signal at the spot and a data plan. Mounted high and aimed at the approach.
Adding the house network later
When the barn gets internet from the house over a wireless bridge or buried cable, the NVR can be viewed from a phone. That link is its own page and its own line on the quote.

Do security cameras work without internet?
Yes, as long as they record somewhere local. PoE cameras cabled to an NVR record to its hard drive with no internet at all, and you view them on a monitor at the recorder. Cameras with SD cards record to the card. What you lose without internet is live viewing and alerts on your phone away from home. Cellular cameras use the cell network instead of internet for that.
What is the best security camera for a barn with no Wi-Fi?
If the barn has power, wired PoE cameras to an NVR in the barn or shop: they record around the clock, need no Wi-Fi, and take the cold better than battery cameras. If the barn has no power, a cellular camera with a solar panel. Wi-Fi cameras are the wrong choice for a building the Wi-Fi does not reach.
Do cellular security cameras need a data plan?
Yes. A cellular camera has its own SIM and sends clips over a carrier's network, so it needs a data plan and cell signal where it is mounted. Check the signal at that exact spot with your phone before buying. The plan and app account are yours; we mount the camera and panel and aim them.
Do solar cameras work in a Minnesota winter?
They can, with limits. Short days, low sun and snow on the panel cut charging, and cold drains batteries faster. Mount the panel facing south, steep enough to shed snow, and clear of shade from the building or trees. Expect fewer clips or a lower frame rate in January; for round-the-clock recording in winter, wired power is better.
How do you mount cameras on a pole barn with steel siding?
Into the wood behind the steel: a girt, a post or a block added inside. The mount screws go through the steel into wood with sealing washers so the hole does not leak, and cable goes through a sealed grommet or a junction box. On a building with a liner, we find the girts from the inside first.
How far can a camera be from the NVR?
A PoE camera on ethernet cable can be about 100 meters (328 feet) of cable from the switch or NVR. Farther than that needs a switch in between, a fiber run, or a wireless bridge. On acreage, putting the NVR in the shop instead of the house often keeps every run in range.
