You can install Mastercraft windows you bought at Menards without the store: JMB Builders does the labor only, across the Twin Cities metro. Mastercraft is the Menards house brand for vinyl windows; we are an independent installer. Before you order we say whether each opening wants an insert or a nailing-fin unit and confirm the size. Then we pull the old window, pan and flash the opening, set and foam the unit, and trim it. Priced per window.

Menards sells Mastercraft vinyl windows off the shelf and by special order, and the store does not install them. Most window companies will not touch a window they did not sell. That leaves the homeowner with the windows and nobody to set them. We do that job, labor only, the same way we install a window we supplied: opening checked, sill panned, unit set square, gap foamed, trim back on.
The order is where these jobs go right or wrong. A stock Mastercraft double-hung is sized to fit inside a common rough opening, but an insert (pocket) window is measured to the old frame and a new-construction unit is measured to the framing. Order the wrong type and it either rattles in the hole or does not fit at all. Send us the openings before you buy and we will tell you which one to order and what size.
We are an independent installer. We do not sell Mastercraft windows, we are not a Menards program, and we do not get anything from the store. You buy the window; we install it.
What you supply
- The Mastercraft windows: insert or new-construction, correct size, confirmed with us before you order
- The Menards order printout or the label on each frame, so we can match units to openings
- Extension jambs if Menards offers them for your unit, or we mill our own (see pricing)
- Your choice of interior casing profile if it should not match what is there now
- Paint or stain color if you want the new trim finished — painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and paint it yourself
What JMB supplies
- Removal and haul-away of the old windows, sashes, frames and stops
- Sill pan or flexible pan flashing, flashing tape, house wrap patches and low-expansion window foam
- Shims, fasteners, backer rod and exterior sealant
- Exterior trim, brickmould or capping where the siding is opened up for a nailing-fin unit
- Interior stops, extension jambs, stool, apron and casing, primed and caulked
- Rot repair at the sill or framing when we find it, quoted from the photos or on the spot
- Photos of every finished window in your job folder
- Painting or staining of the new trim when you want it, quoted as its own line
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos within one business day. What moves the number:
- Insert into the old frame vs. a full-frame nailing-fin install with the siding or stucco opened up
- Window size and type: a large slider or a picture unit takes two people; a small bathroom double-hung does not
- Second-floor openings that need staging or a ladder crew
- Siding type around the opening: vinyl and lap siding open fast, stucco and brick take longer
- Interior finish: new extension jambs and casing vs. reusing the trim that is there
- Rot at the sill or in the framing under the old unit
- How many windows in one visit; the first one carries the setup
Send the Menards order or the frame labels, a photo of each window from inside and out, and a tape across the old frame. We check the sizes before you pick the order up.
How long it takes
Inserts: three to five in a day. New-construction units with the siding opened up: one to three a day, depending on size and floor. Trim and paint are extra days when you want them.

Situations and options
Insert (pocket) windows into the old frame
The old sashes and stops come out and the new Mastercraft unit sets inside the existing wood frame. The exterior trim and siding stay untouched. Fast, but only right when the old frame is square, solid and dry; we check that first.
New-construction units with a nailing fin
The whole old window comes out to the framing. We open the siding, pan the sill, set the unit on the fin, tape the jambs and head, and put the exterior trim back. This is the fix for a rotted frame or a bad old install.
Mixed orders
Most houses want inserts in the sound openings and full-frame units where the old frame has failed. We walk the openings from your photos and tell you which is which before you order, so every unit fits the hole it is going into.

Do you install Mastercraft windows from Menards that I bought myself?
Yes. That is what this service is. You buy the Mastercraft windows at Menards, in stock or special order, and JMB Builders installs them labor only anywhere in the Twin Cities metro. We are an independent installer, not part of a Menards program. Send the order and photos of the openings and you have a per-window quote in one business day.
Should I order insert or new-construction Mastercraft windows?
It depends on the old frame. If the existing wood frame is square, dry and solid, an insert sets inside it and the outside trim never moves. If the frame is rotted, out of square or the old install leaks, a new-construction unit with a nailing fin replaces everything back to the framing. Send photos of each window from inside and outside and we will tell you which to order for each opening before you buy.
How do I measure for a Mastercraft insert window?
Measure the inside of the old frame, jamb to jamb, at the top, middle and bottom, and use the smallest width. Do the same for height from the sill to the head jamb, and check the frame depth. The insert is ordered a little under those numbers so it shims in square. If any of that is unclear, send the photos and a tape shot and we will do the math with you.
What do I check when the Menards order arrives?
Before you sign for it, check each label against your order: size, insert or new-construction, glass package, grille pattern and color. Look for cracked corners, a warped frame or a sash that will not lock. A wrong or damaged unit is easier to swap at the store before install day than after the old window is out. Send us a photo of the labels and we confirm they match the openings.
Do you install the trim after the window goes in?
Yes. Inside we install stops, extension jambs, a stool, apron and casing to match what is in the room, primed and caulked. Outside we put the brickmould or capping back and seal it. Painting or staining the new trim is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and paint it yourself.
Can you replace a rotted frame you find under the old window?
Yes, and it is common on north- and west-facing windows in older homes. We show you what is there, cut out the bad sill or framing, put in new treated or solid lumber, pan the sill and set the window on it. It is quoted before we continue so there are no surprises on the bill.
