Hail hit in September. The claim was approved in October, the windows land in December, and you are wondering if anyone takes windows out of a house at ten degrees.

Insurance window replacement in winter works in Minnesota when the install is run for the cold: one opening open at a time, the new unit on site before the old one comes out, sealants, tape and foam rated for low temperatures, and every opening closed before dark. JMB Builders installs claim windows through the winter across the Twin Cities metro, or schedules for spring if that suits your claim. Priced per project.
- One opening open at a time, closed the same day
- Cold-rated sealants, tape and foam
- New unit on site before the old one comes out

Late-season hail is common enough in Minnesota that a lot of claim windows arrive in winter. The claim takes weeks, the order takes weeks, and the first snow comes before the install. The windows can go in. What changes is how the day runs and what goes into the opening.
Open time is the first thing. A window does not come out until its replacement is on site, checked against the opening and ready to set. One opening is open at a time, the room door is shut or a plastic sheet hung across it, and the new unit is set, shimmed, fastened and foamed before the next one starts. The house heat stays on. Every opening is closed before the crew leaves, never left with plastic overnight.
The second thing is materials. Many sealants, flashing tapes and foams list a minimum application temperature on the label, and some need a primer in the cold. We use products rated for the cold and keep them warm until they go on. Exterior caulk or paint that needs a warmer day may wait for a short return visit, and we tell you before the install if that is the plan. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or paint it yourself. On a replacement-cost claim, the timing of the final invoice affects when held-back depreciation is released, and some policies set a deadline to complete repairs. Check your policy and ask your agent before choosing winter or spring. Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. 325E.66) bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying your deductible, and we do not.

How long it takes
Winter installs run a little slower per opening than summer ones. A few windows: a day. A whole house: several days, room by room, each opening closed the same day.

Situations and options
Install now
The windows go in as they arrive, one opening at a time, with cold-rated products. The final invoice goes to your insurer when the work is done, which can release held-back depreciation sooner.
Install glass and sashes now, full units in spring
Glass units and sashes swap in from the inside with little open time. Full-frame units that need siding opened can wait for warmer weather. The scope is split into two visits on one invoice timeline.
Wait for spring
Broken glass stays boarded or gets a temporary pane through winter. Ask your insurer in writing whether your policy has a deadline to complete repairs before choosing this.
Insurance Window Replacement in Winter — Fall Hail, Cold Installs: questions, answered
Can insurance windows be replaced in winter in Minnesota?
Yes. The new window is on site before the old one comes out, one opening is open at a time, the room is sealed off from the house, and the sealants, tape and foam are rated for the cold. Each opening is closed the same day. The work runs a little slower per window than in summer.
Will the house get cold during a winter window install?
The room being worked on does, for a short time. The door is shut or plastic hung across it, and the heat stays on in the rest of the house. Each opening is open only long enough to pull the old unit and set the new one.
Do caulk and foam work in the cold?
Products made for cold weather do, and most list a minimum temperature on the label. We use cold-rated foam, tape and sealant and keep them warm until they go on. Exterior caulk or paint that needs a warmer day may get a short return visit.
Should I wait until spring to replace my insurance windows?
It is your choice, but check your policy first. Some policies set a deadline to complete repairs or to claim held-back depreciation. Ask your agent before deciding, and keep any broken glass boarded or temporarily glazed until the install.
Does a winter install change the insurance claim?
Not the scope itself. Snow removal at the work area or a return visit for exterior caulk can be extra lines; whether the insurer pays them is up to your adjuster. The final invoice still matches the approved scope line by line.
Can a contractor cover my deductible on a winter install?
No. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying any part of your insurance deductible, and JMB Builders does not, whatever the season.
