Hail-Dented Window Capping Claim — Re-Wrap the Trim or Leave It

Every window on the west side has capping that looks like a golf ball. The windows themselves are fine. Whether that is a re-wrap or a shrug depends on where the dents are and what is under them.

Hail dented aluminum window capping is the coil stock bent over the exterior window and door trim, and on the adjuster's scope it is the wrap line, written per opening or by the LF. JMB Builders, across the Twin Cities metro, tells you which openings need the capping re-wrapped and which can stay, re-bends new coil to the same profile in the matching color, and writes the wrap lines to match the scope. Priced per opening.

  • Priced per opening, the wrap line on the scope
  • New coil bent to the same profile and color
  • Honest call on which openings can stay

Replacement window with white aluminum-capped exterior trim on a lap-sided Twin Cities home

Window capping is thin aluminum coil, bent on a brake to fit over the wood brickmould or casing so the trim never needs paint. It is the softest metal on the house, and hail dents it before it marks anything else. The dents are in the flat faces that face the sky: the top of the head, the sill cover, and on the weather side, the face of the jambs. Nothing under the capping is hurt by a dent. What is hurt is how the house looks, and on some openings, the seal where the capping meets the window.

On a hail scope the capping is the wrap line, usually one per opening with a size, sometimes by the LF, and often grouped with the siding or the windows. Adjusters write it when they see it and skip it when they do not, and from the ground a dented sill cover is easy to miss. We photograph each opening from a ladder with the light across it, count the dents, note which faces are hit, and write the wrap lines per opening so you can compare them to the scope. Where the dent is at a seam or has cracked the paint, we say so, because that is where water starts.

Re-wrapping is what the line pays for. The old capping comes off, the wood trim under it is checked and repaired if it needs it, and new coil is bent to the same profile in the matching stock color and fastened and sealed the same way as new work. Dents cannot be pulled out of coil. Where only one face on a sheltered opening has a dent or two and the paint is intact, leaving it is a fair choice, and we tell you which openings those are rather than wrapping everything.

What you supply

  • A photo of each dented opening from the ground and, if you can, one from a ladder with the sun or a flashlight across the capping
  • The capping color, or a photo of an undamaged window on the shaded side for the match
  • The adjuster's scope and your claim number, and whether the siding or windows are also on the claim
  • Your decision on openings we say could stay: wrap them anyway, or leave them

What JMB supplies

  • An opening-by-opening count of dented faces with photos, written as wrap lines per opening to match the scope
  • A clear note per opening: re-wrap, or can stay, with the reason
  • Removal of the dented capping and a check of the wood trim under it, repaired if hail or old water got to it
  • New aluminum coil bent on site to the same profile, in the matching stock color, fastened and sealed as new work
  • Door capping, garage door jamb wraps and fascia wrap handled on the same visit when they are on the scope
  • Coordination with the siding crew if the siding is being replaced, since capping goes on after the siding
  • Before-and-after photos per opening in your job folder

How it is priced: per opening

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • How many openings are re-wrapped vs. left, after the opening-by-opening count
  • Window size and the profile: a simple brickmould wrap vs. a wide casing with a sill nose
  • Color still on the coil chart vs. an older color that has to be matched close
  • Wood trim under the capping found soft and repaired before the new wrap
  • Second-story openings on a ladder or staging
  • Doors, garage door jambs and fascia on the same scope

Send one photo per dented opening and one of a clean window on the shaded side. We reply within one business day with which openings look like a re-wrap and which may be able to stay.

How long it takes

A handful of openings on one side: a day. Every window and door on a two-story house: two to three days. If the siding is being replaced, the capping is scheduled after it.

Situations and options

Re-wrap the dented openings

The capping on the weather side is dented on every face. The old coil comes off, the trim is checked, and new coil is bent to the same profile in the matching color and sealed. One line per opening on the scope.

Leave the lightly dented ones

A sheltered opening with a dent or two on the sill cover and intact paint. We note it as could stay, with a photo, and you choose. If the adjuster wrote it anyway, it is your call whether to wrap it or leave the line unused.

Capping with new windows

The windows on that side are also being replaced on the claim. New windows get new capping as part of the install, so the wrap line and the window line are done together, and the old capping is not re-wrapped only to come off.

Capping after new siding

The siding is on the claim too. The capping goes on after the siding so the J-channel and the wrap lap the right way. We coordinate the date with the siding crew and do all the openings in one pass.

Hail-Dented Window Capping Claim — Re-Wrap the Trim or Leave It: questions, answered

Does hail damage to window capping go on the insurance claim?

Usually, as a wrap line per opening or by the LF, grouped with the windows or the siding. Whether it is written depends on the adjuster seeing it, and a dented sill cover does not show from the ground. We photograph each opening from a ladder and write the wrap lines so they can be compared to the scope. Whether your policy pays it is between you and your insurer.

Can dents in aluminum window capping be fixed without replacing it?

No. Coil stock is too thin to pull a dent out of, and filling and painting it leaves the dents. The capping is removed, the trim under it is checked, and new coil is bent to the same profile and color. It is the same work as the original wrap, which is what the wrap line on the scope pays for.

Is dented window capping cosmetic or functional damage?

A few dents in a flat face are cosmetic; the wood under them is fine. Dents at a seam, at the corner where the head meets the jamb, or that have cracked the paint are where water gets behind the capping and the trim under it rots, which is functional. We photograph each opening and say which it is, so the scope and the decision are made on what is there. Some policies have a cosmetic exclusion for metal; ask your agent.

Will the new capping match the old on the other side of the house?

White and the common browns match from current coil. An older or faded color will show a little against the shaded side. We hold a sample of the new coil against a clean opening and photograph it for the file, and if the match is poor we say so before anything is bent. Re-wrapping the whole house is an option when the match matters and the claim allows it.

If my windows are being replaced on the same claim, do I still need the wrap line?

The new windows get new capping with the install, so the openings being replaced do not need a separate re-wrap. The wrap line still matters on the openings where the window is staying and only the capping is dented. We separate the two on our estimate so the scope is not paying twice for the same opening.

What is under the capping, and does hail hurt it?

Wood brickmould or casing, sometimes a sill nose, that the capping was bent over years ago. Hail does not reach it. What hurts it is water that got behind old capping at a seam before the storm. When the dented capping comes off we look, and if the wood is soft we repair it before the new wrap goes on, as its own line, so the new capping is over sound trim.
