Custom Size Windows Insurance Claim — Odd Openings, Measured Lines
Hail hit a house where hardly any two windows are the same size: an older home, a custom build, a remodel that cut new openings.

On a custom size windows insurance claim, the scope has to carry each window's real size, because an odd opening is not priced like a common one. JMB Builders measures every opening in person, writes width, height, type and glass on each line for your adjuster, places one order once the claim is approved, and puts the lead time on the quote. Twin Cities metro to St. Cloud. Priced per window.
- Every opening measured in person before ordering
- Real size, type and glass on each scope line
- One order once approved, so frames and glass match

Most replacement windows are built to order anyway. What makes a house a custom-size job is that the openings do not line up with anything common: a 1940s house with tall narrow double-hungs, a custom home with wide picture units and transoms, a split-level where a remodel left three different sill heights on one wall. When hail breaks a dozen of those, the size of each window is what drives its price and how long it takes to build.
That is where claims go sideways. An estimate written from a quick exterior walk can list windows by type and count without real sizes, or price an odd unit like a common one. The fix is paperwork, not argument: each window measured inside and out, its size, operation, glass and grille pattern on its own line, and a photo of the opening with a tape in the frame. Your adjuster can then price each line against what is actually there.
You file the claim and deal with your insurer; we measure, write the line-item scope, meet the adjuster when you want us there, and install once it is approved. Lead time depends on the brand and series and is written on the quote; we do not promise a date we do not control. Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. 325E.66) bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying any part of your deductible, and we do not.

What you supply
- Your claim number and the adjuster's estimate, if it has been written
- Any window labels, receipts or the builder's window list you have
- Decisions on glass, grilles and color before the order goes in
- Access to every window inside and out on the measuring day
- Your paint color for new casing — painting is quoted as a separate line, or paint it yourself
What JMB supplies
- One in-person measure of every opening, damaged or not, before anything is ordered
- A line-item scope by opening: location, rough and unit size, operation, glass, grilles, interior and exterior trim
- Photos of each opening with a tape in the frame for the adjuster
- One order for the approved windows, so frame color and glass match across the house
- Board-up or a temporary pane where glass is out while the order is built
- Room-by-room install, floors and furniture covered, every opening closed before we leave
- A final invoice matched to the approved scope, with finished photos
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Each window's size, since large and odd units cost more to build and set
- Operation and shape: picture, casement, double-hung, transom, angled or arched tops
- Glass makeup, tempered panes where required, and grille pattern
- Insert into the old frame or full-frame out to the rough opening
- Exterior finish around the opening: siding, brick or stucco
- Second-story units and staging
Send photos of each damaged window with a tape measure across the glass. We reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate and we measure every opening.
How long it takes
Measuring: one visit. Order: depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Install: a few windows to a full house over several days, room by room.

Situations and options
Insert sized to the old frame
When the frame is sound and square, a replacement unit is built to fit inside it. Each insert is sized from the measured frame, so odd frames simply mean odd orders. Interior trim usually stays.
Full frame to the rough opening
When frames are cracked or rotted, the whole unit comes out and the new one is built to the rough opening. Sizes are confirmed after the old unit is out of a test opening if the house gives reason to doubt the drawings.
Reframing to a common size
Shrinking an odd opening to a common size changes the house. On a claim that is a change from like kind, so ask your adjuster first, and expect the reframing and siding or trim patch as owner-paid lines.
Custom Size Windows Insurance Claim — Odd Openings, Measured Lines: questions, answered
Do custom size windows take longer to get on an insurance claim?
They can. Replacement windows are built to order, and large, arched or unusual units can sit in a different production line than common sizes. Lead time depends on the brand and series and is written on the quote. The order goes in once the scope is approved, and broken glass gets a board-up or temporary pane in the meantime.
Why does the window size matter to the adjuster?
Because a window is priced largely by its size, type and glass. An estimate that lists a window by count without a real size can price an odd unit like a common one. A scope with each window measured and photographed with a tape gives the adjuster what they need to price each line.
Can I make my windows a standard size to save time on the claim?
It is possible to reframe an opening smaller, but on a claim that is a change from what was there. Ask your adjuster in writing before deciding, and expect the reframing, siding or trim patching and any interior work to be your cost. Bedroom windows also have to keep their egress size, which limits how small they can go.
Will every window be measured before the order?
Yes. Every opening on the order is measured in person, inside and out, before anything is ordered. Photos and the adjuster's numbers are not enough to order from, because a made-to-order window that is off by a little cannot be sent back.
Can the custom windows be ordered before the claim is approved?
Not by us. A made-to-order window cannot be returned, and the approved scope can still change glass, size or count. Once the scope is approved and your choices are made, the order goes in as one package so color and glass match.
Can a contractor pay my deductible on a custom window claim?
No. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying any part of your insurance deductible, and JMB Builders does not. The deductible is your share of the repair, whatever size the windows are.
