Paver Pad for Trash Cans, AC Unit, Generator or Grill — Small Pads

The trash cans sink into the mud beside the garage every spring and the AC condenser has tipped on its plastic pad; a small paver pad under each fixes both for good.

A paver pad for trash cans, an AC unit, a generator or a grill is a small compacted pad that keeps the thing on it level and off the mud. JMB Builders builds them across the Twin Cities metro: topsoil out, class 5 compacted, pavers or a single large slab set level with edge restraint, sized to the bins or the unit. The AC or generator itself is moved and reconnected by its own licensed trade. Priced per unit.

  • Priced per pad; two or three in one visit cost less each
  • Compacted class 5 base so the pad stays level through frost
  • Sized to the bins, condenser, generator or grill
  • Quote from photos, reply within one business day

Side of a Minnesota rambler where a small paver pad is being set beside the garage

Not every paver job is a patio. Some of the most useful ones are a few square feet: a pad beside the garage so the trash and recycling bins sit level and roll out to the curb without plowing a rut in the lawn; a pad under the AC condenser so it stops tilting as the ground heaves; a pad for a standby generator; a pad for the grill so it is off the deck and off the grass. They are small jobs, and they are done the same way a patio is, because a pad set on dirt tips in the first winter the same as a patio does.

We dig the topsoil out to firm ground, compact class 5, screed sand and set the pavers or a single large concrete slab dead level, then spike edge restraint around the open sides so the pad does not spread. The pad is sized to what sits on it, with room to walk around a condenser for service and room to pull the bins out without stepping off the pavers. For a condenser or a generator, the pad is level, not pitched, because the unit needs to sit flat.

Moving the AC condenser or the generator is not our job. A condenser is disconnected, lifted and reconnected by a licensed HVAC tech, and a generator by the installer or a licensed electrician, so we build the pad beside the unit or coordinate the day so their tech lifts it on and we are done before they come back. Bins and grills you move yourself.

What you supply

  • What sits on the pad: how many bins, the condenser or generator model, or the grill footprint
  • The paver or slab you want, or let us match the pad to the walk or patio nearby
  • The HVAC tech or generator installer lined up for the day if the unit has to be lifted onto the pad
  • Clear access to the spot; shrubs trimmed back from the side of the house

What JMB supplies

  • Topsoil dug out to firm ground and the hand-dig near the AC line set, gas line and any buried wires
  • Class 5 compacted and bedding sand screeded level
  • Pavers or a single large slab set level, with edge restraint spiked in on the open sides
  • Polymeric sand in the joints so the pad stays locked and weeds stay out
  • A paver or gravel apron from the pad to the driveway for rolling the bins out
  • Landscape rock or sod put back around the pad
  • Photos of the finished pad in your job folder

How it is priced: per unit

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Pad size: two bins, three bins, a condenser with service room, or a generator
  • Pavers vs. one large slab; a slab is faster and has no joints under a condenser
  • How many pads in one visit; the second and third are cheaper than the first
  • Soil: sand beside the garage digs fast, clay and roots do not
  • A rolling path from the bin pad to the driveway in pavers or gravel
  • Working around a condenser that stays in place vs. an open spot
  • A short screen or fence panel beside the pad to hide the bins

Send a photo of the spot with the bins or the unit in it and a tape measure across it. Small pads are quoted from photos.

How long it takes

One small pad: half a day. Two or three pads at the same house: one day. A condenser or generator pad is scheduled with the tech who lifts the unit.

Situations and options

Trash and recycling bin pad

A pad sized to the bins beside the garage or along the side of the house, with a paver or gravel strip to the driveway so the bins roll to the curb without crossing lawn. Often paired with a short screen panel.

AC condenser pad

A level paver or single-slab pad under the outdoor unit so it stops tilting as the ground heaves, with room on the service side. The unit is lifted off and back on by a licensed HVAC tech.

Standby generator pad

A compacted paver or slab pad sized to the generator's footprint and the clearances in its manual, level for the unit. The generator is set and connected by its installer and a licensed electrician.

Grill or smoker pad

A paver pad off the deck or beside the patio so the grill is on a hard, level surface instead of grass or deck boards, sized for the grill and a step back from it.

Paver Pad for Trash Cans, AC Unit, Generator or Grill — Small Pads: questions, answered

Can you build a paver pad for my trash and recycling bins?

Yes. It is one of the more common small jobs we do. The pad is sized to the number of bins and placed where they live now, usually beside the garage or along the side of the house, on a compacted class 5 base so it stays level through the frost. A paver or gravel strip to the driveway lets the bins roll out without cutting a rut in the lawn.

Will you move the AC condenser to build a pad under it?

No, the condenser is on a refrigerant line and a power feed, and it is disconnected, lifted and reconnected by a licensed HVAC tech. We either build the pad right next to the unit for the tech to set it on, or coordinate a day when the tech lifts it, we build the pad, and the tech sets it back. The pad itself is level, not pitched, because the unit needs to sit flat.

Why not use the plastic pad the AC came on?

The plastic pad is only as level as the ground under it, and the ground beside a house heaves every winter. A paver or slab pad on compacted class 5 keeps the unit level, which keeps the compressor happy and the refrigerant lines from stressing where they enter the house. Ask your HVAC tech; most of them would rather see a real pad.

What size pad does a standby generator need?

The size in the generator's manual, which sets the footprint and the clearances from the house, windows and the gas meter. We build to that drawing, dead level, on a compacted base. Some generators come with their own composite pad that then sits on ours. The gas and electrical connections are made by the installer and a licensed electrician, not by us.

Does a small pad really need a compacted base?

Yes. A few pavers set on dirt tip in the first winter and the bins or the grill end up sitting on a slope. The topsoil comes out to firm ground, class 5 is compacted, and the pavers sit on screeded sand with edge restraint around them. It is a half-day job done right and a half-day job done again every spring if it is not.

Can the pad match the walkway or patio?

Yes. Send a photo of the walk or patio and we match the paver, or use a single large slab in a close color if you want fewer joints under a condenser. If the pad connects to the walk, the pattern is tied in so it reads as part of the same build rather than a square dropped beside it.
