A pea gravel patio is the lowest-cost hard surface you can sit on. It drains through, it does not crack or heave in a way you notice, and it is easy to change later. It is also soft underfoot, it moves when you walk on it, and it wanders into the lawn if nothing holds it in. Most of the complaints about gravel patios come from skipping the parts under and around it.
The build: strip the sod and dig out, compact a class 5 base so the patio stays firm and water drains away, and set an edge that stands above the base to hold the gravel in: steel edging, a paver soldier course or stone. Fabric over the base keeps weeds down and keeps the gravel from sinking into the base. Pea gravel goes on at a depth that covers without being so deep that chair legs sink. Stepping pavers or flat stones set flush in the gravel give firm spots for chairs, a table and a walking path.
Honest trade-offs against pavers: gravel is less money and drains better; pavers are firm, shovel clean and work for a wheelchair or a walker. In Minnesota, a gravel patio is hard to shovel, and plows and snowblowers throw the gravel. Most people treat it as a summer space.

Low-profile steel edging staked along the edge. Clean line, follows curves, and the most affordable edge that works.
Gravel with a paver border
A soldier course of pavers on a compacted base around the edge. Holds the gravel better and gives the mower a hard edge to ride.

Large pavers or flat stones set flush in the gravel for a walking path and firm spots under chair and table legs.
Gravel fire pit area
A fire pit ring on a firm pad in the middle of a gravel circle. Gravel does not burn and handles sparks better than grass or wood.

Is a pea gravel patio a good idea in Minnesota?
For a summer sitting area or a fire pit, yes: it drains, it does not crack, and it costs less than pavers. It is hard to shovel and plows throw it, so it is not a year-round walk. Built on a base with an edge, it holds up to the freeze and thaw.
Does pea gravel stay in place on a patio?
It stays put when an edge holds it and the base under it is firm and covered with fabric. Without edging it drifts into the lawn and beds. Some gravel kicks out over time; a top-up every few years keeps it even.
What goes under a pea gravel patio?
A compacted class 5 base sloped so water leaves the patio, then landscape fabric, then the pea gravel. The base keeps the patio firm and stops the gravel from sinking into the soil. Skipping it is why gravel patios get soft and muddy.
Pea gravel or pavers for a patio?
Gravel costs less, drains through and is easy to change. Pavers are firm, flat, easy to shovel and better for anyone with a walker or a wheelchair. Many people start with gravel and add a paver pad under the table.
Can you put a fire pit on a pea gravel patio?
Yes. Gravel does not burn, so it is a good surface around a fire pit. The pit sits on a firm pad or on the compacted base, with gravel around it and chairs on stepping pavers.
Can chairs sit on pea gravel?
Chair legs sink a little in loose gravel. A shallower layer over a firm base helps, and stepping pavers set flush in the gravel give chairs and a table a solid spot.
