Paver Patio Under a Deck — Dry, Level Pavers Below an Elevated Deck

The space under the deck, finished — pavers that drain, cut tight to the posts, with the under-deck drip handled instead of ignored.

A paver patio under a deck turns the mud and gravel below an elevated deck into a usable floor: pavers on a compacted base, graded to drain away from the foundation, cut around the deck posts. JMB Builders builds them across the Twin Cities metro and north to St. Cloud, at walkouts and on sloped lots where the deck is a story up. Priced per project, quoted from your photos, with a reply within one business day.

Minnesota home with an elevated deck where a paver patio underneath is planned

The ground under a deck is always shaded and always wet. Rain drips through every board gap, the soil never dries, and the walkout door tracks the mud inside. A paver patio under the deck gets more water per square foot than an open patio, so the base and the grading matter more, not less. Done right it is the shadiest, driest place to sit in July.

The build: strip the old rock, fabric and muck and haul it. Wet soil under a deck compacts poorly, so we often dig deeper and use more class 5 than an open patio needs, compacted in lifts. Bedding sand, pavers, edge restraint and polymeric sand, with the whole pad pitched away from the foundation. Each deck post gets cut around with a sand joint, not buried. Downspouts that dump under the deck are extended past the patio, and where the grade cannot carry water out, a channel drain at the house side or a buried line to daylight does it.

Some owners add an under-deck ceiling system that catches the drip and runs it to a gutter, which makes the space dry enough for furniture that stays out. With or without one, the patio still has to drain, because the splash and the snow melt come in from the sides. We also look at what the deck posts stand on; a post on a footing is built around, a post on a patio block gets pointed out before we bury it in pavers.

What you supply

  • Paver style and color from samples; we order and deliver
  • Which way the water should go: the yard, a swale, or a drain line we run to daylight
  • Whether an under-deck ceiling is going in, so the gutter outlet and the patio pitch agree
  • Any lights or an outlet under the deck: wired by a licensed electrician

What JMB supplies

  • Utility locate and a check of where the deck posts bear
  • Old rock, fabric and muck stripped and hauled
  • A compacted class 5 base, deeper where the soil is wet, graded away from the foundation
  • Pavers cut around each post with a sand joint, edge restraint and polymeric sand
  • Downspouts extended past the patio and a drain at the low side when the grade cannot carry the water
  • A step or landing at the walkout door tied into the patio
  • Photos of the finished patio in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Square footage and how many posts to cut around
  • How wet the ground is: wet soil means more digging and more base
  • Grade: a walkout that already slopes away vs. a flat spot that needs a drain line
  • Head room: a low deck is slower to work under by hand
  • Downspout extensions and a drain run to daylight
  • Tying in to an existing patio or the steps off the deck

Send a photo from under the deck toward the house and one from the yard looking in, after a rain if you can. We can set up a free in-home estimate from that.

How long it takes

A typical walkout patio under a deck: three to five days. A drain line to daylight adds a day.

Situations and options

Walkout patio under the deck

Pavers from the walkout door out to the deck's drip line and a step past it, pitched away from the house, with a landing at the door. The most common version.

Pavers under a low deck

A deck too low to sit under still collects mud and mice. Pavers on a drained base keep the storage under it dry and the lattice off the dirt.

Patio with a drain at the house side

Where the yard rises away from the house, a channel drain along the foundation or a catch basin in the low corner takes the water to a buried line that daylights downhill.

Paired with an under-deck ceiling

The ceiling system catches the drip and sends it to a gutter; the patio is pitched so the gutter outlet and the side splash both run off. The two are planned together.

Paver Patio Under a Deck — Dry, Level Pavers Below an Elevated Deck: questions, answered

What is the best thing to put under a deck?

It depends on whether you want to use the space. For a floor you can sit on, pavers on a compacted base pitched away from the house. For dry storage only, a graded rock bed does the job for less. Either way the grading is the part that matters: water that drips through the deck has to leave, not sit against the foundation.

Does a patio under a deck need to slope?

Yes, away from the house. Every rain comes through the deck boards onto the patio, so it is pitched to carry that water to the yard, a swale or a drain. A flat patio under a deck holds a puddle at the foundation wall and feeds the basement.

Can you put pavers around deck posts?

Yes. Each post is cut around with a small sand joint so the paver does not bind on the post and the post is not buried in wet sand. If the posts stand on footings we build around them. If a post stands on a patio block or bare dirt, we tell you before we cover it, because that post is the deck's real problem.

Will the ground under a deck stay dry with pavers?

The surface will drain and the mud goes away; the drip from the deck does not. Pavers on a compacted base with polymeric sand shed water to the low side instead of soaking it up. For a space that stays dry enough for cushions, an under-deck ceiling that catches the drip is the add-on, and the patio is built to drain its outlet.

How do you keep water out of the walkout door under a deck?

Grade the patio away from the door, keep the pavers a step below the threshold, and where the yard rises away from the house put a channel drain along the foundation with a line to daylight. Extend any downspout that drops under the deck past the patio edge. The door stays dry when the water has somewhere lower to go.

Will pavers under a deck heave in winter?

Ground under a deck is shaded and wet, so it freezes harder than open yard. That is why we dig deeper into the wet soil and compact more class 5 than an open patio gets, and why the base is graded to drain. Pavers on a base that holds no water move very little and move together.
