Trim repair after water damage means pulling the swollen MDF baseboard and casing a flood, a dishwasher leak or an ice dam ruined, checking the wall behind it with a moisture meter, and installing new trim once everything is dry. MDF baseboard soaks up water like a sponge. After a basement flood, a dishwasher or water heater leak, or an ice dam draining down inside a wall, the base swells, the paint cracks and the bottom of the door casing goes soft. Drying it out does not shrink it back. The swollen pieces come out and get replaced.
Order matters. The water source has to be fixed and the wall has to be dry, or the new trim swells too. We meter the drywall and the bottom plate before we nail anything, cut out drywall that stayed wet, and only then run new base and casing. When a restoration company already did the demo and drying, we pick up where they stopped: measuring what is missing, matching the profiles and putting the room back. Mold remediation, when the wall needs it, is referred out; we do the carpentry after.

How long it takes
A room of base and one or two door openings: one day once the wall is dry. Add a return visit when drywall has to be patched and textured. A whole finished basement: two to four days.

Situations and options
Basement flood
Base and shoe around the whole finished basement, door casings and jamb bottoms, and the bottom foot or two of drywall. We meter the plates, cut out what stayed wet, and replace trim room by room.
Dishwasher or sink leak
Usually a short run of base and the toe kick beside the appliance, plus the base under the cabinet run. The floor and subfloor get checked before the trim goes back.
Ice dam drain-down
Water that came in at the eave and ran down inside the wall shows up as swollen base and stained casing at a window or an exterior wall. We replace the trim and the drywall behind it, and repair the roof edge or quote the insulation fix so it does not repeat.
After a restoration company
The demo and drying are done and the room is bare. We measure what came out, match profiles to the untouched rooms, and rebuild the trim and drywall as one job.

Can swollen MDF baseboard be dried out and saved?
No. Once MDF has swelled it stays swelled; sanding it down leaves it thinner and fuzzy, and it never paints right again. Solid wood base sometimes survives a short wetting once it dries, but MDF comes out. New base is not expensive per foot, and the labor to fit it is the same either way.
How long does the wall need to dry before new trim goes on?
Until a moisture meter says the drywall and the bottom plate are back to normal, not until it looks dry. That is usually several days with air movers after a clean-water leak and longer after a flood. We meter it on the first visit and will not nail new trim to a wet wall, because the new trim would wick the water too.
Do you cut out the wet drywall too?
Yes, when it is needed. Drywall that stayed wet along the floor line is cut out to dry material, the cavity is checked, and new drywall is patched in, taped, textured to match and primed. On a flood that is usually the bottom foot or two of the wall all the way around. It is done before the new base goes on.
Will you match the trim in the rest of the house?
Yes. Send a photo or a piece of the old base and casing. Most profiles from the last forty years are still stocked at the lumberyards around the metro. If one is not, we pick the closest and use it through the whole room so nothing looks patched, or have a short run milled when it has to match.
Does insurance cover trim replacement after a leak?
Sudden leaks and ice-dam damage are usually covered; slow leaks and groundwater flooding often are not, depending on the policy. We write the quote as line items — feet of base, openings of casing, drywall area, painting — with photos, so the adjuster can approve it. We do not bill the insurer directly, but we will talk to the adjuster if you ask.
Should the new base be MDF again?
In a basement or a room with an appliance that leaked once, we recommend primed pine or poplar for the base and casing. It costs a little more per foot and it survives a second wetting. In an upstairs room where the leak was a one-time event, MDF is fine and matches what is there.
