A bookcase door is a heavy door. A loaded unit weighs far more than a slab, and it hangs on special hinges or a pivot that have to land on solid framing. The kits from Murphy Door, Hide-A-Way and others come prehung in a jamb, sized to a rough opening. The install goes wrong in two places: an opening that is not plumb and square, so the door drifts open or rubs, and a floor that is not level, so the bottom scrapes when books go on the shelves.
When you bought a kit, we check the rough opening against the maker's install sheet before it arrives, reframe it if it is off, set the unit plumb and square, fasten the hinge side into doubled framing, and trim it so the casing blends with the room. When there is no kit, we build one: a framed and blocked opening, a bookcase on heavy-duty hinges or a pivot, and trim that hides the gap.
Most requests are for a basement: a storage room, mechanical room or bar tucked behind shelves. A mechanical room door still has to open easily and leave access clear, and we plan the swing so it does.

Do you install Murphy Door or Hide-A-Way bookcase doors I bought?
Yes. We install the kit you bought, following the maker's install sheet. Send us the model and rough opening size first and we check your wall against it, so the opening is ready when the crate shows up.
Can you build a hidden bookcase door without a kit?
Yes. We frame the opening, build a bookcase sized to it and hang it on heavy-duty hinges or a pivot, then trim it to hide the gap. A site-built door can match other built-ins in the room. It takes longer than a kit.
Can a hidden door go on a mechanical or furnace room?
Yes, as long as it opens easily and the equipment stays reachable. We plan the swing so the door clears the furnace, water heater and panel, and use a catch that opens with a pull, not a hidden lock you have to hunt for.
Why do bookcase doors sag or rub the floor?
Weight. Loaded shelves put a lot of force on the hinge side, and an opening that is not plumb or framing that is not solid lets the door drop. The hinge side is fastened into doubled framing and the floor checked for level before the unit goes in.
Can you put a hidden door in a load-bearing wall?
Yes, with a header. A new opening in a bearing wall needs a header sized for the load; a larger opening is sized by an engineer. JMB pulls the permit when the job needs one.
Do you paint or stain the bookcase door?
We can. Painting or staining is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and finish it yourself. Prefinished kits only need the trim finished to match.
