Custom built-ins in St. Michael, MN tend to land in two places: the cramped entry of a split-level and the lower level of a two-story with a walkout. JMB Builders builds entry storage, mudroom lockers, basement media walls and bar cabinets on site, from plywood boxes and face frames scribed to your walls, primed or stain-grade. Priced per project. Photos get a reply within one business day; a free in-home estimate works too.
- Priced per project
- Split-level entries and walkout basements
- Built on site, scribed and anchored

St. Michael filled in fast through the 1990s and 2000s with two-stories and split-levels. The split-level entry is famously tight: a landing, a half-flight up and a half-flight down, and often no coat closet within reach. A shallow built-in on the landing wall, with hooks, a bench and a cubby row, gives that entry somewhere for coats and shoes to go.
The other place is the lower level. Many homes here have walkout basements that were finished years after the house was built, and the family room down there usually has one long wall for the TV. A media wall with base cabinets, a TV panel and side shelves, or a wet-bar run of cabinets with a counter, makes that room feel finished instead of furnished.
Every built-in is cut and assembled on site, screwed to the studs, scribed where the wall or slab is out, and trimmed into the base and casing you have. If the lower level is getting new trim at the same time, both jobs share one schedule. We build in Hanover and Albertville as well.

Custom Built-Ins in St. Michael, MN: questions, answered
Can you add storage to a split-level entry?
Yes. Split-level entries in St. Michael often have no coat closet nearby. A shallow built-in on the landing wall, with a bench, hooks and cubbies, fits without blocking the door or the stairs. We measure the landing and the door swing first.
Do you build built-ins in finished basements?
Yes, it is one of the most common places for them here. Media walls, bar cabinets and bookcases go on the long wall of the lower-level family room. We level the boxes on the slab and scribe them to the walls.
Does a basement bar need a permit in St. Michael?
The cabinets do not change framing. A sink, drain or new circuit is plumbing or electrical work done by licensed trades, and most cities require a permit for those. We check with the City of St. Michael building department before we build.
Are built-ins worth it compared to store-bought furniture?
A built-in fits the wall wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling, is anchored to the studs and is trimmed into the room, so it does not tip or leave gaps. It costs more than flat-pack furniture. Most owners pick built-ins for the walls they see every day.
What wood do you use for built-ins?
Paint-grade is poplar face frames on MDF or plywood boxes, which matches painted trim. Stain-grade is hardwood plywood with solid face frames, often oak to match oak trim in 1990s homes. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
How are built-ins priced in St. Michael?
Per project, from the wall size, the number of sections, doors and drawers, paint or stain, and any counter or TV panel. Send a photo with a tape across the wall and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
