A board and batten wall in Rogers, MN is usually a feature wall in a living room, home office or bedroom: battens laid out evenly from corner to corner, full height or wainscot height with a cap rail. JMB Builders marks the layout on the wall before cutting, adds box extenders at outlets, and leaves it filled, caulked and primed. Priced per wall. Photos get a reply from us within one business day.
- Priced per wall
- Layout marked before any cuts
- Full height, wainscot or shiplap

Feature walls are one of the most common trim jobs we do in Rogers. The houses are recent, so the walls are flat and close to plumb, which is good for board and batten: the battens can be set tight to a level line and the gaps stay even. Most requests are for the long wall in a living room, the wall behind a desk in a home office, or the headboard wall in a primary bedroom.
The job is mostly layout. Before anything is cut we find the studs, mark the outlets, switches and any window on that wall, then space the battens so the bays come out equal and nothing lands half on a switch plate. On a wainscot, the cap rail height is set off the windowsill or the counter so it lines up with something in the room.
Many newer walls have an orange-peel or knockdown texture. On a full-height wall we either skim the bays smooth or run a thin panel behind the battens so the texture does not show through the paint. Shiplap is the other common pick here. Owners in Otsego and St. Michael ask for the same walls.

How it is priced: per wall
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Wall width and height, and full height vs. wainscot
- Number of battens and whether there is a horizontal grid
- Texture that needs a panel or skim coat behind
- Outlets, switches, windows or a fireplace on the wall
- A cap rail, ledge or hook rail at the top
- Painting, quoted as a separate line
Photo with a tape across the wall, the ceiling height, and where the outlets are is enough to quote a single wall.
How long it takes
One accent wall: one day, sometimes a second morning for caulk and touch-up. A room of wainscot: two to three days.

Situations and options
Full-height accent wall
Vertical battens floor to ceiling on one wall, often behind a bed, TV or desk. Simple, strong shadow lines.
Wainscot with a cap rail
Battens to about two-thirds or chair height with a cap rail on top. Common in dining areas and offices.
Grid pattern
Vertical and horizontal battens in squares or rectangles across the wall, laid out so the squares come out equal.
Shiplap instead
Nickel-gap boards run level from a snapped line, cut around outlets with box extenders. A flatter, horizontal look.
Board and Batten Wall in Rogers, MN: questions, answered
Which walls get board and batten in Rogers homes?
Mostly the long living room wall, the wall behind a home office desk, and the headboard wall in a bedroom. Rogers houses are mostly late 1990s and newer with big open rooms, so one feature wall changes a lot. Entry walls with a hook rail are another common one.
Can you put board and batten over textured walls?
Yes. On orange-peel or knockdown texture we either skim the bays smooth or put a thin panel behind the battens, so the texture does not show through the paint. On a wainscot with a cap rail, some owners leave the texture. We tell you which one your wall needs from the photos.
Do I need a permit for an accent wall in Rogers?
A board and batten wall is surface trim, not a change to framing or wiring. If the project also moves an outlet or adds a light on that wall, the electrical is done by a licensed electrician and most cities want a permit for new wiring; we check with the City of Rogers building department first.
How much is a board and batten wall in Rogers?
It is priced per wall. Width, height, how many battens, wall texture, outlets and windows on the wall, and a cap rail all move the number. A photo with a tape across the wall gets a reply within one business day.
Board and batten or shiplap?
Board and batten is vertical shadow lines with flat wall between, which reads more formal and suits offices and dining areas. Shiplap is horizontal boards with small gaps, which reads more casual. Both go in from a marked layout and are left primed for paint.
Will you paint the wall?
We can. The wall goes in with holes filled, edges caulked and primed. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself. A satin or semi-gloss shows the shadow lines best.
