Therma-Tru describes Profiles as its standard steel door offering, pairing distinctive style with affordability, and Traditions as its commodity steel door with attractive designs at value pricing. Profiles uses 24-gauge zinc-coated steel with a high-definition triple shadow embossment; Traditions uses 25-gauge zinc-coated steel. Both come smooth and primed, ready to paint, and both appear in Therma-Tru's current fiberglass and steel catalog.
Both lines are available with Low-E glass and are sold as complete door systems with a matched frame, sill and weatherstripping. Steel is a practical fit for side and back doors, house-to-garage doors and budget front entries.
In Minnesota steel doors conduct more cold than fiberglass and can dent, so we usually suggest them for secondary doors and recommend the Low-E glass and a factory-primed or painted finish to resist rust.

Insulation and energy performance in Minnesota
Steel skins over an insulated core keep these doors ahead of a plain wood slab, but steel conducts cold at the edges and any glass is the biggest heat loss. For Minnesota, order Low-E glass or a solid panel, keep them to protected or secondary openings, and expect a fiberglass door to feel warmer in the same spot.
Glass packages
- Low-E glass available on both Profiles and Traditions
- Clear and decorative lite options as shown in the Therma-Tru catalog
Frame and sash
Steel door skins over an insulated core, sold as a complete door system with matched frame, sill and compression weatherstripping.
Ratings
Therma-Tru publishes ratings per door and glass combination; ask for the NFRC label on the specific style. Therma-Tru states that over 80 percent of its door and glass combinations are ENERGY STAR qualified.
What the install adds
On install day we set the frame on a sill pan, tape the frame to the housewrap, fill the rough-opening gap with low-expansion foam, and finish the interior with backer rod and sealant so the air barrier is continuous. Exterior joints get backer rod and a quality sealant, and we adjust the sill and strike so the weatherstrip compresses evenly all the way around.
