Masonite's steel line covers the value end of the entry-door aisle. HD Steel doors have high-definition panel profiles for crisp panel definition and a smooth primed finish. Sta-Tru steel doors are offered in steel-edge and wood-edge versions.
All have a polyurethane core for insulation. Fire ratings are offered only on opaque (no glass) HD and Sta-Tru HD doors: wood-edge doors are 20-minute rated in 6-foot-8 and 7-foot heights, and steel-edge doors are 90-minute rated. The 20-minute 6-panel with spring-loaded hinges is the standard house-to-garage door at The Home Depot and Lowe's. Panel styles range from classic 6-panel to flush and modern designs, with glass options on many.
Masonite's exterior door warranty covers Sta-Tru steel doors for 20 years (5 years on finish). Steel is the most affordable exterior door category and offers strong forced-entry resistance, but it conducts cold at the edges, so the frame, sill, and weatherstrip seals matter more here than on fiberglass.

Insulation and energy performance in Minnesota
A steel door's polyurethane core insulates well, but the steel skin conducts cold to the edges and around lites, so in Minnesota choose a solid or small-lite design, order Low-E glass on any lite, and buy the complete prehung unit so the weatherstrip and adjustable sill seal against the slab. For a heated garage-to-house opening, the fire-rated 6-panel with a tight seal is the practical choice.
Glass packages
- Clear glass upgradable to Low-E or Low-E argon on glazed designs
- Decorative and textured glass options on select steel designs
- Solid (no glass) designs for the highest insulation and security
Frame and sash
Steel skins over a polyurethane foam core, in steel-edge or wood-edge construction; a wood stile conducts less cold at the edge than a steel edge. Prehung with frame, sill, and weatherstrip; Masonite's Performance Door System (64 percent better at keeping out air and water than the leading competitor, per Masonite) is built around its fiberglass doors, so we confirm the frame and sill package on a steel order.
Ratings
Masonite lists ENERGY STAR certified steel and fiberglass exterior doors; certification depends on glass size and package, so ask for a certified solid or half-lite steel configuration. Per-design U-factors are not published on the collection page.
What the install adds
On install day we set the unit on a sill pan, tape the frame to the housewrap, fill the jamb and head gaps with low-expansion foam, and seal the interior with backer rod and sealant so the air seal is continuous. Outside, a sealant joint at the brickmould keeps water out of the wall, and we shim and adjust the sill so the weatherstrip compresses evenly all the way around.
