A garden window is a small box that projects past the wall: glass on three sides and the top, a shelf at the bottom, usually over a kitchen sink. The installer sets the box in the opening, flashes and seals it outside, and stops. On the inside the box is deeper than the wall, so there is a gap between the unit and the drywall on the sides and head, and the shelf at the bottom is whatever the manufacturer shipped, often bare or thin.
That shelf is the problem part. It holds plants, plants get watered, and the water runs to the low corner. The glass above it sweats all winter in Minnesota and the condensation runs down onto the same shelf. A particleboard or thin plywood shelf swells within a couple of seasons. The trim-out has to give the box a shelf that can be wet, and jambs and casing that make the opening read like the rest of the kitchen.

Situations and options
Full trim-out of a new garden window
Foam and backer behind the jambs, jamb extensions on the sides and head, casing in the kitchen's profile, and a new shelf sill with a finished front edge. The box reads as part of the kitchen instead of a unit stuck in a hole.
Shelf sill replacement
The swollen shelf comes out, the support under it is checked and repaired, and a PVC or sealed hardwood shelf goes in, sealed at the glass. The existing casing stays. This is the common request on a garden window that is a few years old.
Tiled shelf to match the counter
Cement backer on the shelf support, tile set with a bullnose or metal edge at the front, grout sealed. Plant water and condensation wipe off. Works best when the backsplash is tile and can run up to the box.
Drywall return around the box
If the kitchen's other windows are drywall-wrapped, the sides and head of the opening get drywall and corner bead instead of jambs and casing, and only the shelf is wood or PVC. Same job, different look.

Does a garden window need interior trim?
Yes. The box is deeper than the wall, so there is a raw gap between the unit and the drywall on the sides and head that the installer foams and leaves. Jamb extensions close that gap and casing covers the joint to the wall, or the opening gets a drywall return. Without it you see foam, framing and the edge of the box.
What should the shelf in a garden window be made of?
Something that can be wet every day. Cellular PVC is the safe choice and paints like wood. A hardwood shelf finished on every face before it goes in works if you keep the sealant joint at the glass in good shape. Tile on cement backer is the most water-proof and matches a tiled backsplash. The particleboard or thin plywood shelf that ships with many units is what usually fails.
My garden window shelf is swollen and the corners are soft. Can you replace just the shelf?
Usually. The shelf sits on a support inside the box, and it comes out without disturbing the glass or the casing. We check the support and the rough sill under it, replace anything soft, and set a new PVC or hardwood shelf sealed at the glass. If the box itself is rotting at the bottom corners, that is a window problem and we tell you before we start.
Why does my garden window sweat so much in winter?
It sticks out past the insulated wall with glass on five sides, so it is the coldest surface in the kitchen, and the kitchen is the wettest room. Condensation on the glass runs down onto the shelf. Insulating and sealing behind the jambs helps a little, and a water-proof shelf handles what runs down. Lowering the furnace humidifier in January helps most.
Can the casing around a garden window match the rest of the kitchen?
Yes. The opening is cased like any other window, in the same profile and species as the room. Stained oak, painted flat stock, craftsman with a header — send a photo of a cased window or door in the kitchen and we match it. The shelf can be the same species sealed on all sides, or PVC painted to match painted trim.
Do you install the garden window too, or just trim it?
Both. If you have bought a garden window and need it set, we install it, flash and seal the exterior, and trim the inside in the same job. If the window is already in, we do the interior trim on its own. Either way, send photos of the opening and the unit label and we quote it.
