Tile does not fall off a sound wall. When shower tiles come loose, the wall behind them has let go. In many 1970s to 1990s Twin Cities bathrooms the tub or shower walls were tiled on greenboard, a moisture-resistant drywall that is not made for a shower, often with the tile stuck on with organic mastic. Water gets through a cracked grout line or a failed caulk joint at the tub, the greenboard gets soft, the mastic lets go, and the tiles slide or fall.
A soft wall means the damage is behind the tile. The repair starts by taking off the loose tile and the tile around it until we reach solid backer, and checking the studs and the bottom plate. Then the section is rebuilt: wet board out, cement board in, a waterproofing membrane over it and over the seams to the old wall, and tile set in thinset. Matching tile is the limit: if spare tile or a close match is available, a section repair can blend.
If the wet spreads across the whole wall, or the rest of the tile is hollow, a section repair only moves the problem. Then we quote a full tear-out and re-tile of the surround, with the tub or pan left in place when it is sound.

All three walls torn out to the studs, rebuilt, waterproofed and tiled new. When the wet is widespread or the tile cannot be matched.
Hold until the re-tile
When you need the shower now, loose tiles are removed and the opening is sealed so water does not reach the wall while the full job is scheduled.

Why are my shower wall tiles coming loose?
Water got behind them. Through cracked grout or a failed caulk joint, it soaks the backer board or greenboard, and the adhesive lets go. Tiles set in mastic on greenboard, common in older bathrooms, fail this way most. The loose tile is a sign of a wet wall behind it.
Can I glue loose shower tiles back on?
Not if the wall behind them is soft. Glue on wet greenboard holds briefly and lets water keep soaking the wall. If the backer is solid and dry and only the tile let go, a tile can be reset in thinset. Press on the wall: soft means it needs rebuilding.
What does a soft shower wall behind tile mean?
The backer board or drywall behind the tile is wet and breaking down. It usually spreads further than the soft spot you can feel. The fix is to open the wall, cut out the wet board, check the studs, and rebuild with cement board and waterproofing before retiling.
Why are tiles falling off the bathroom wall outside the shower?
Outside the shower it is usually the adhesive or the prep, not water: tile set on painted drywall without a bond coat, or with the wrong adhesive. Loose tile is removed, the wall cleaned or skimmed, and the tile reset in thinset or replaced.
Can part of a shower wall be retiled without redoing the whole shower?
Yes, when the damage is limited and the tile can be matched with spares or a close match. The seam between old and new backer is covered by the waterproofing membrane so the repair is watertight. If the whole wall is wet, a section repair only delays the full job.
Is there mold behind loose shower tile?
There can be staining on the back of wet board and studs. We cut out all wet material, let the framing dry and show you photos before closing it. Anything that needs more than that is discussed with you before we rebuild.
