A porch roof is a small roof with the hardest details on the house. It is usually lower-sloped than the main roof, it dies into a wall instead of a ridge, and its edge sits over the steps everyone uses. When it leaks, the water shows up in the porch ceiling, the header over the front door, or the top of the porch columns.
Most porch roof leaks start at the wall. The shingles have to tuck under step flashing along the sides and a head flashing along the top, and that flashing has to go behind the siding. When the porch roof was reshingled without pulling the siding back, the old flashing was caulked instead, and caulk fails. A replacement fixes that: siding eased off, new flashing woven in, siding back down over it.
Slope decides the roofing. Shingles need a minimum pitch to shed water; many porch roofs are close to it or below it. Below it, the roof gets a membrane instead of shingles. We look at the pitch in the photos and tell you which it is before the quote.
Under the shingles, porch sheathing and fascia often rot at the front edge, where the gutter overflows or there never was a drip edge. Those boards are replaced as part of the job. If the beam over the posts sags or a post is rotted, that is a separate repair and gets quoted first.

Shingle porch roof
The pitch is steep enough for shingles. Torn off, sheathing repaired, ice and water barrier along the eave and the wall, new flashing, and shingles matched to the main roof.
Low-slope porch roof
The roof is too flat for shingles to shed water. It gets a membrane roof instead, run up the wall and flashed behind the siding, with a metal edge at the front.
Porch roof with a leak at the wall only
The roofing is sound and only the flashing at the house failed. The siding is eased back, the first courses lifted, new step and head flashing put in, and everything closed back up.

Can you replace just the porch roof without redoing the whole house roof?
Yes. A porch roof is its own small roof that ties into the house wall, not into the main roof. It can be torn off and replaced on its own. We match the shingles to the main roof as closely as current colors allow.
Why does my porch roof leak where it meets the house?
Because that joint depends on flashing that runs behind the siding, and it is often missing or caulked instead. When water gets behind it, it runs down the wall into the porch ceiling or the header over the door. The fix is new step and head flashing tucked under the siding, not more caulk.
Can a low-slope porch roof have shingles?
Only if the pitch is at or above the minimum the shingle maker allows. Below that, shingles hold water instead of shedding it and leak in the first ice dam. A low-slope porch roof gets a membrane instead, flashed up the wall and finished with a metal edge.
My porch roof is sagging. Is that the roof or the porch?
Usually the porch. A sag between the posts is the beam, and a dip at one corner is often a rotted post or a heaved footing. Sheathing can also sag between rafters when it is rotted. We look at the photos and tell you which it is, and fix the structure before the new roof goes on.
Do you replace the porch ceiling at the same time?
We can. When the leak stained or sagged the porch ceiling, it is quoted as its own line, usually PVC beadboard that does not rot. It goes up after the roof is dry.
How long does a porch roof replacement take?
Most front porch roofs are done in one day: tear-off, sheathing, flashing and roofing. A roof tied into stucco or brick, or one with a lot of rot, can take a second day.
