Spring thaw, and a run of gutter is hanging off the eave or lying in the flower bed. Here is how it goes back up so next winter does not do it again.

Gutters come off in a Minnesota winter two ways. An ice dam fills the gutter solid and the weight pulls the hangers out of soft fascia, a section at a time. Or snow slides off a metal roof or a steep shingle roof in one sheet and shears the gutter off on the way down. Either way the hangers usually held; the wood behind them did not, or the gutter sat right in the path of the snow.
The repair starts behind the gutter. Rotted fascia and sub-fascia get cut out and replaced, or the hangers will pull out again. Straight sections are reset; kinked or crushed ones are replaced with new seamless sections or a joined piece matched to the old color. The run is rehung on hidden hangers at close spacing, screwed through the fascia into the rafter tails where we can reach them, and pitched to the downspout.
Under a metal roof, or a steep roof that dumps snow, the gutter is set lower on the fascia so the roof edge sheds over it instead of into it. Where snow slides every winter, snow guards on the roof above are the other half of the fix.

Why did ice and snow rip my gutters off?
Either an ice dam filled the gutter solid and the weight pulled the hangers out of soft fascia, or snow slid off the roof in one sheet and sheared the gutter off. The hangers are rarely the weak point; rotted fascia behind them or a gutter set right in the snow's path is.
Can a gutter torn off by ice be reused?
A section that is still straight with no kinks can be reset on new hangers. A gutter that is creased, crushed or twisted will never drain right again and gets replaced. We check the pieces on site and tell you before we start which ones go back up.
Do you fix the fascia behind the gutter before rehanging it?
Yes, every time. Hangers screwed into rotted fascia pull out again the first heavy winter. Soft fascia and sub-fascia are cut out and replaced with new wood, wrapped or painted to match, and the gutter goes back on solid wood.
How do you keep snow sliding off a metal roof from tearing off the gutter?
Set the gutter lower on the fascia so the roof edge sheds over it rather than into it, and add snow guards on the roof above so snow melts off in place instead of sliding in one sheet. On some metal roofs the answer is no gutter on that eave and a drip line of rock below.
Does insurance cover gutters ripped off by ice and snow?
Some policies cover sudden damage from the weight of ice and snow, and some exclude it or treat it as wear. Photograph the damage before anything is moved and call your insurer to ask. We give you photos and a line-item quote either way.
Can you replace just one section of seamless gutter?
Yes. The damaged length is cut out and replaced with a new section joined to the old gutter with a sealed seam, or the whole run between corners is replaced when that is cleaner. The new section is matched to the old color as closely as current coil allows.
