Pole barn walk door replacement is usually a framing job as much as a door job: the wood jamb and the framing around it rot at the bottom where water and snow sit against the steel. A pole barn walk door takes a beating: wind catching it wide open, snow piled against the bottom all winter, and water running off the roof edge straight onto the threshold. The wood jamb and the framing at its base rot long before the steel skin of the building shows it, and by the time the door drags, the frame has usually moved.
Replacing only the door slab into a rotted frame buys one season. The job is to open the trim, cut out the soft wood down to sound framing, rebuild the opening square with treated lumber, then set the new door on a sealed sill so it closes and latches again. The steel trim around the opening is replaced so water sheds over the head and away from the bottom.

Situations and options
Door only, framing sound
When the framing is solid and the door itself is rusted or bent, the old unit comes out and a new prehung door goes into the same opening with new trim and flashing.
Rotted jamb and framing
The most common case. Rot at the bottom of the jamb and the framing is cut out, new treated framing goes in, and the door is set square and flashed so the water that caused the rot sheds away.
Heaved slab at the door
When frost has lifted the concrete at the threshold and the door drags, the door is set to the new floor height or the opening is adjusted so it swings clear.

Why does the bottom of my pole barn walk door jamb rot?
Water runs off the roof edge onto the threshold, snow sits against the bottom of the door all winter, and wood trapped behind steel trim stays wet. The jamb and the framing around it rot from the bottom up. A new door needs the framing rebuilt and flashing that sends water out, not in.
Can I buy my own pole barn walk door and have you install it?
Yes. A steel prehung walk door from a farm store, lumberyard or building supplier works. Send the label or order with your photos so the size and swing are checked against the opening before the install day. A door can also be supplied with the job.
Can you replace a walk door without removing the steel siding?
Usually only the trim around the door and a narrow strip of steel come off. If the rot has run down into the splash plank or out into the wall framing, more steel is removed to reach it and put back after. Photos of the bottom of the jamb show which case you have.
My pole barn walk door drags on the floor, is it the door or the frame?
When a walk door drags, the cause is usually a frame that has sagged from rot at the bottom, loose hinges pulling out of soft wood, or a slab that frost has pushed up. The fix depends on which one it is. Photos of the gap at the top and the bottom of the door usually show it.
What kind of door works best on a pole barn?
A steel prehung walk door with a treated or composite frame holds up best in a pole building, since the bottom of a wood frame is what rots first. Insulated doors make sense on a heated shop. Outswing or inswing is set by how the door is used and where snow piles up.
Will the new steel trim match my pole barn color?
Trim is bent or bought in the closest stock color to your building. Older steel fades, so even the same color name can look a shade off at first. The original building paperwork or a color sample from the supplier helps get the closest match.
