Composite railing kits from Trex, Veranda (Home Depot), Fiberon and the lumberyards come as posts or post sleeves, rail sections in fixed lengths, balusters, brackets and caps. The box does not include the deck it goes on. The posts have to be anchored to the deck frame, not to the decking, the sections have to be cut to the actual post spacing, and the stair rail has to land at the right height with a handrail someone can grip. That is carpentry, and the store does not send anyone to do it.
Where these go wrong: surface-mount posts screwed to the deck boards instead of bolted through the rim joist, which rock the first time someone leans on them. Sections cut short so the bracket screws have nothing to bite. Post spacing wider than the kit's rated section, so the rail sags. A stair rail that misses the code height because the posts were set for the deck, not the stairs. We set the posts first, to the frame, then cut everything else to fit.

- Stair rail kits with the angled brackets and a graspable handrail for each stair run
- Post mount hardware or through-bolts if the kit sells them separately (we tell you which)
- Lighting caps or accessories if you want them fitted in the same visit (low-voltage wiring only; line-voltage is an electrician's)
- Stain for any wood you want finished under the new rail — quoted as a separate line, or do it yourself

- Removal and haul-away of the old wood or metal railing
- Post layout so every section falls within the kit's rated span and the stair posts land where the stair rail needs them
- Blocking inside the rim joist and structural through-bolts or approved post-mount hardware for each post
- Cutting of rail sections, balusters and post sleeves to fit, with the cut ends hidden in the brackets
- Bracket screws, shims and stainless fasteners where the kit's hardware is short
- Stair rail sections cut at the stair angle and set to code height and grip
- Rim joist repair or a new rim board when the old one is rotted where the posts anchor
- Photos of the finished railing in your job folder

- Total feet of rail and the number of posts, which is set by the kit's section length
- Number of stair runs; a stair rail takes longer per foot than a level run
- Surface-mount posts bolted through the rim vs. wood 4x4 posts sleeved and capped
- Removing an old railing and filling the holes it leaves in the decking
- Rim joist or deck frame repair where the old posts rotted the wood
- Deck height and access: a second-story deck means ladder work below the rim
- Lighting caps and low-voltage wiring fitted in the same visit

How long it takes
A single-level deck with three sides of rail and one stair run: one to two days. Add a day for a second stair run, a wraparound, or rim joist repair.

Situations and options
Surface-mount composite posts
The kit's post bolts to a mounting plate on the decking, and the plate has to sit over solid framing. We add blocking between the joists or through-bolt the mount into the rim joist so the post cannot rock. Screws into the deck boards alone are not enough and we do not do it that way.
Wood posts with post sleeves
A treated 4x4 bolted inside the rim joist with a composite sleeve, skirt and cap over it. Stronger for tall decks and easier to fix on an odd frame. We set the post plumb, bolt it, sleeve it and cut the sleeve to the cap height.
Stair rail sections
The stair kit has rail sections that cut at the stair angle and brackets that swivel. The rail has to meet the height rule on the stairs, not the deck, and have a handrail someone can wrap a hand around. We set the stair posts for that first, then cut the sections to fit.
Replacing a wood railing with composite
The old rail comes off, the deck boards get checked where the old posts were, and the new posts usually land in different spots. We fill or replace the boards with old post holes and lay out the new posts to the kit's section length.

Yes. We are an independent installer, not a dealer for any of these brands. Send photos of the deck and stairs and a tape across the longest run and you have a per-foot quote in one business day.
How far apart do the railing posts go?
The kit sets that. Each rail section comes in a fixed length and is rated for a maximum post spacing, so posts go at or inside that spacing and the sections are cut down to fit the run. Corners and stair tops each need a post. We lay the posts out from your photos before you order so the count is right and every section lands on a post.
Can you screw the posts to the deck boards?
No, and that is the mistake we fix most. A railing post has to be anchored to the deck frame: through-bolted to the rim joist with blocking behind it, or set on a mount that is bolted through solid framing, not just the decking. A post screwed into deck boards rocks the first time someone leans on it and will fail when it matters.
How tall does a deck railing have to be?
A residential deck guard has to meet the code minimum height, measured from the deck surface, and a deck high enough off the ground requires a guard at all. The stair rail has its own height rule, measured from the tread nosing, and needs a handrail someone can grip. Kits are sold to meet those heights when the posts are set right; we set them right and do not quote the numbers on a web page because your city's inspector has the final word.
Do you install the stair railing too?
Yes. The stair rail is the hardest part of a kit and the part most people leave off. It uses the kit's stair sections and angled brackets, set between a post at the top and a post at the bottom of the run. We cut the sections at the stair angle, set the height to the stair rule, and add the graspable handrail the kit or code calls for.
Can you replace my old wood railing with a composite kit?
Yes. The old rail and posts come off and go in our trailer, we check the rim joist and decking where the old posts were bolted, and repair rot if we find it. The new kit's posts usually land in different places, so the old holes get filled or the boards replaced. Then the new rail goes on, anchored to the frame.
