Is the permit fee covered on an insurance window claim? Often it is treated as part of the cost to repair when the city requires a permit, but your policy decides, so check your policy and ask your agent. JMB Builders pulls the permit when the job needs one, lists the fee as its own line on the scope and invoice, and schedules the inspection. Twin Cities metro, window work priced per window.

Many Twin Cities cities require a permit for window replacement, at least for full-frame work or any job that changes an opening. Others do not for a same-size swap, and glass-only or sash work usually needs none. The city decides, not the insurer and not the contractor. When the job needs a permit, JMB pulls it in our name as the licensed contractor, posts the card and schedules the inspection. A homeowner should not have to pull a permit for work a contractor is doing.

On the paperwork, the permit is its own line. Insurance estimating software has a line item for permits and fees, and an adjuster can add it when the city requires one, but it is easy to leave off a window scope. If your estimate does not show it, we list the fee on our scope with the city's name and the work it covers, so the adjuster can see it and you can ask for a supplement. Whether your insurer pays it, and whether it falls under the cost to repair or under ordinance or law coverage, is in your policy; check your policy and ask your agent.

The permit also changes what can go in. An inspector looks at egress in bedrooms, tempered glass where it is required and energy code glass, which can change the window that is ordered. Those code items are their own lines, apart from the permit fee. You file the claim and deal with your insurer; we pull the permit, build to code and put the permit card and final inspection in your claim file.

  • The permit pulled in JMB's name when the job needs one
  • The permit fee as its own line on the scope and final invoice, with the city named

How it is priced: per window

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Whether the city requires a permit for your scope
  • The city's permit fee, which is set by the city and passed through as its own line
  • Full-frame versus insert, sash or glass-only replacement
  • Code items the inspection triggers: egress, tempered glass, energy code
  • Extra trips for inspections on a large or multi-phase job

Send the adjuster's estimate, your city, and which windows are being replaced. We reply within one business day with whether a permit applies.

How long it takes

The permit is pulled before the work starts and usually adds a few days to a week depending on the city. Inspections are scheduled after the install; most cities inspect window jobs at the end.

Situations and options

Permit required

Full-frame replacement or an opening change in a city that requires a permit. JMB pulls it, lists the fee, and schedules the final inspection.

No permit required

Glass-only, sash or same-size insert work in a city that does not permit it. The scope notes that no permit is required, so the adjuster is not left wondering.

Permit missing from the estimate

The city requires one and the adjuster left it off. We list it with the city named, and you ask your insurer for a supplement.

Is the Permit Fee Covered on an Insurance Window Claim?: questions, answered

Who pulls the permit on an insurance window replacement?

The contractor doing the work. When the job needs a permit, JMB Builders pulls it in our name as the licensed contractor, posts the card and schedules the inspection. You do not have to go to the city for work we are doing.

Will insurance pay the permit fee on a window claim?

Often a required permit is treated as part of the cost to repair, but your policy decides. Some policies handle code-related costs under ordinance or law coverage. Check your policy and ask your agent. We list the fee as its own line so the adjuster can see it.

Do I need a permit to replace storm damaged windows in my city?

It depends on the city and the work. Many Twin Cities cities require one for full-frame replacement or any opening change; same-size inserts, sash and glass-only work often need none. We check your city's rules for your scope and tell you before the work is scheduled.

The adjuster's estimate has no permit line. What do I do?

If the city requires a permit for the work, ask your insurer to add it as a supplement. We put the permit on our scope with the city named and the work it covers, so you have something specific to send. You make the request; we provide the line and the permit receipt.

Can a permit change which windows the insurance pays for?

The permit itself does not, but the inspection can require code items: egress size in a bedroom, tempered glass near tubs and doors, energy code glass. Those can change the window ordered. We list each code item on its own line, apart from the permit fee.

What do I get for my claim file when the inspection passes?

The permit number, the signed-off card or the city's online record of the final inspection, and our final invoice with the permit fee as its own line. Some insurers ask for it before releasing held-back depreciation.
