Foggy Window After Hail Storm — Was It the Hail or Just Age?
A week after the hail, two windows on the west side went cloudy between the panes.

Is a foggy window after hail storm season from the hail? It can be: a hard hit can crack the glass edge or damage the seal and frame around it. Often it is age, and the storm just made you look. JMB Builders checks for impact marks on that window and the ones beside it, photographs what we find with a scale reference, and replaces the glass unit or sash. Twin Cities metro, priced per window.
- Priced per window
- Impact signs vs age-related fogging checked
- Glass unit, sash or whole window

A double- or triple-pane window is a sealed glass unit: panes held apart by a spacer, sealed at the edges, often filled with gas. When the edge seal fails, moist air gets in and condenses between the panes. Most seal failure is age: years of heating and cooling, sun on the dark side of the house, water sitting in the sash. A hard hailstone can also crack the glass at the edge, break the seal, or dent and twist the sash or frame enough to pull the unit apart. Hail-caused fogging is less common than age, and it leaves evidence.
The signs point one way or the other. Hail-caused: the fogged windows face the storm, the same side has dents on the capping, cladding or screens, there may be a chip or crack at the glass edge, and the fog showed up within days or weeks after the storm. Age-related: fogged windows on every side, including ones the hail could not reach, white mineral streaks or residue between the panes from years of wet and dry, and windows near the end of their expected life. Many windows are both: old seals that the storm finished off. Whether a seal failure is covered, and how your insurer treats it, is policy language; check your policy and ask your agent.
We look at the fogged windows and their neighbors, photograph impact marks with a scale reference, and write down which windows show hail signs and which do not, so the claim is honest and specific. You file the claim and deal with your insurer. The fix is the same either way: a new sealed glass unit in the sash when the frame is sound, a new sash, or a whole window when the frame is dented, cracked or discontinued.

What you supply
- Photos of the fogged windows and when you first noticed them
- The storm date, and photos of hail or damage on the same side of the house
- The window brand and the label or glass etching if you can find it
- The claim number and adjuster's scope if you filed
- Access inside and out to the fogged windows and the ones beside them
What JMB supplies
- A check of each fogged window and its neighbors for impact signs: edge chips, dents, torn screens
- Photos with a scale reference and notes on hail signs versus age signs, window by window
- Meeting your adjuster to look at the windows, when you want us there
- Glass units measured and ordered to size, with tempered glass where the code requires it
- New sealed glass unit set in the existing sash, a new sash, or a whole new window as the scope lists
- Glazing stops, setting blocks and seals reset, and screens put back
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Glass unit only, new sash or whole window
- Glass size, double or triple pane, and any grilles between the glass
- Tempered glass where a window is near a door, tub or floor
- Whether the maker still makes the sash or the frame matches
- Second-story access
- Other hail damage on the same window: capping, cladding, screens
Send a photo of each fogged window from inside, a close-up of the glass edge and the label or etching, and a photo of that side of the house from outside.
How long it takes
Glass units are made to order, so the wait is the order. Once here: a glass unit swap takes about an hour per window, a sash or whole window longer.

Situations and options
Glass unit only
The sash and frame are sound and the only problem is the fogged unit. A new sealed unit is made to size and set in the existing sash with new setting blocks and seals.
New sash
The sash is dented or cracked along with the glass. A new sash from the same maker goes into the old frame, when the maker still makes it.
Whole window
The frame is dented, cracked or out of square, or the parts are not made. The window is replaced, matched to the others on that wall.
Foggy Window After Hail Storm — Was It the Hail or Just Age?: questions, answered
Can hail break the seal on a window?
It can. A hard hailstone can crack the glass at the edge, break the edge seal, or dent and twist the sash or frame enough to pull the sealed unit apart. It is less common than seal failure from age. Look for dents, chips and torn screens on the same side as the fogged window.
How can I tell if my foggy window is from hail or just old?
Hail-caused fogging is on the side that faced the storm, appears within days or weeks after it, and comes with dents, chips or torn screens on that same side. Age-related fogging shows up on all sides, often with white mineral streaks between the panes. Many windows are both: old seals the storm finished off.
Will insurance pay for a window seal that failed after a hail storm?
It depends on your policy and on the evidence that hail caused it. Seal failure from age or wear is usually not covered; damage from the storm may be. Check your policy and ask your agent. We give you photos and notes on which windows show hail signs and which do not.
How long after a hail storm does a window fog up?
If the seal was broken by the storm, moisture can start showing between the panes within days or weeks, often first on cool mornings. Note the date you first saw it and take a photo. Fog that appears a year or more later is harder to tie to the storm.
Can you replace just the foggy glass and keep the window?
Usually, yes. If the sash and frame are sound, a new sealed glass unit is made to size and set in the existing sash. If the sash or frame is dented, cracked or the parts are not made, a new sash or whole window is the fix.
What should I photograph if a window fogs after hail?
The fogged glass from inside, the glass edge up close, and the outside of the same window: capping, cladding, sill and screen. Add photos of the rest of that side of the house showing hail marks. Write down the storm date and the date you first noticed the fog.
