Raised Paver Patio on a Retaining Wall — Patio Built Up on a Slope

A patio at door height on a yard that drops away — a block wall, compacted fill, pavers on top and steps down — instead of a deck you have to stain.

A raised paver patio on a retaining wall is a patio built up to the door on a sloped lot: a block wall holds the fill, compacted in lifts, and the pavers go on a base on top, with steps down to the yard. JMB Builders builds them across the Twin Cities metro and north to St. Cloud as a deck alternative off a sliding door. Priced per project, quoted from your photos, with a reply within one business day.

  • Priced per project: wall, fill, pavers and steps
  • Fill compacted in lifts, not dumped
  • Wall sized by an engineer above the code height

Minnesota home on a sloped lot where a raised paver patio on a retaining wall is planned

When the sliding door is a step or more above the yard, the usual answer is a deck. The other answer is a raised patio: a block retaining wall around the footprint, fill inside it, pavers on top at the door height, and block steps down to the lawn. No boards to stain, no joists to rot, and the patio reads as part of the house instead of a platform stuck to it.

Where raised patios fail is the fill. Dump it in, lay pavers, and a year later the patio has settled away from the house and the pavers run downhill toward the wall. We place fill in lifts and compact each one, with geogrid laid from the wall back into the fill on the courses the height calls for. The wall itself is built like any retaining wall: compacted base, buried first course, setback, drainage stone and a pipe to daylight, filter fabric, caps. On top goes a compacted class 5 base, bedding sand and pavers pitched away from the house.

At the house, the pavers stop a step below the threshold and never bury the siding; the wall there is flashed and a gap left so water does not sit against the sheathing. Where the drop from the patio to the yard is over the height the code allows without a guard, railing posts are set in the wall. A wall over the code height, or one carrying a patio load the city counts as a surcharge, is sized by an engineer with a permit from the city.

What you supply

  • Block, cap and paver choices from samples; we order and deliver
  • The finished patio height you want at the door, usually one step down from the threshold
  • Where the steps come down and where the yard water should go
  • Railing style if the drop calls for a guard, and any lights wired by a licensed electrician

What JMB supplies

  • Site measure, grade check, a utility locate and a check of your city's permit rules
  • An engineer's design when the wall is over the code height or carries the patio as a surcharge
  • A compacted base, drainage stone and a perforated pipe behind the wall, filter fabric
  • Block stacked with its setback, geogrid into the fill, fill compacted in lifts
  • Pavers on a compacted class 5 base on top, pitched away from the house, edge restraint and polymeric sand
  • Steps built into the wall in matching block
  • Flashing and a gap at the house wall so the patio never buries the siding
  • Railing posts set in the wall when the drop needs a guard
  • Photos of the finished patio in your job folder

How it is priced: per project

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Patio size and the height of the fill at the door
  • Wall length and height; a square patio has wall on three sides
  • Fill volume brought in and compacted
  • Steps: one set or two, and how many risers
  • Railing or guard when the drop requires one
  • Engineering and permit when the wall is over the code height
  • Access for a skid loader to the back yard

Send a photo of the door from the yard and one along the house wall, and say how far the door is above the ground. We can set up a free in-home estimate from that.

How long it takes

A raised patio with a wall and one set of steps: one to two weeks. Engineered walls add the design and permit time before we start.

Situations and options

Raised patio off a sliding door

The patio at one step below the threshold, wall on the three open sides, steps down the yard side. The common version on a ranch or split-level with a drop at the back.

Raised patio with a seat wall on top

The retaining wall carried one course above the pavers and capped, so the edge of the patio is a bench and a guard in one where the drop allows it.

Raised patio on a walkout side yard

Where the lot drops along the side of the house, the patio is built up on the high end and the wall tapers down to grade at the low end, with steps where it meets the walkout.

Replace a rotted deck with a raised patio

The deck comes down, the footings are pulled, the ledger area is flashed and the siding patched, and the patio is built in the same footprint at the same height.

Raised Paver Patio on a Retaining Wall — Patio Built Up on a Slope: questions, answered

Is a raised paver patio cheaper than a deck?

It depends on the height. Close to the ground, where the wall is short and the fill is small, a raised patio is often in the same range as a deck. The wall and the fill grow with every step of height, so a patio at a second-story door is usually more than a deck. After it is built, the patio costs nothing to stain and has no boards to replace.

Will a raised patio settle away from the house?

Not when the fill goes in the right way. Fill dumped in and paved over settles for years. We place it in lifts, compact each lift, and tie the wall into the fill with geogrid. The paver base on top is compacted again. A raised patio built that way moves with frost the same as any patio: a little, and all together.

Do you need a railing on a raised paver patio?

When the drop from the patio to the yard is over the height the code allows without a guard, yes. Below that, a seat wall on the edge does the job. We set railing posts in the wall as it is built, so the railing is anchored in block, not screwed to caps.

How do you keep water from a raised patio away from the house?

The pavers are pitched away from the house toward the wall, the wall has drainage stone and a pipe behind it, and at the house the pavers stop a step below the threshold with the wall flashed and a gap so the fill never touches the siding. Water goes over the wall or through the pipe, never back toward the foundation.

Does a raised patio need an engineer in Minnesota?

If the wall is over the code height, or your city counts the patio on top as a surcharge on the wall, an engineer sizes the wall and the city issues a permit from the drawing. Low raised patios on a short wall are built on the block maker's tables. We tell you which you have at the site measure.

Can you build a raised patio where my old deck was?

Yes. The deck comes down and is hauled, the footings are pulled, the ledger strip is flashed and the siding patched, and the patio is built in the same footprint at the height the door wants. The old deck's footprint is usually the right size, and the door and the steps already know where to go.
