U-Factor, SHGC, and ENERGY STAR: Window Ratings Explained for Minnesota

Every new window carries an NFRC label full of numbers. Here's what U-factor, SHGC, air leakage, and ENERGY STAR certification actually mean when you're buying windows in Minnesota.

Every certified window ships with a National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label on the glass — you can spot one on the picture window we installed in the photo above. It's the nutrition label of the window world: standardized, independently verified, and the only honest way to compare products across brands.

You really only need to understand two of its numbers to buy well in Minnesota. Here's the whole label, decoded.

U-factor: the winter number

U-factor measures how fast heat escapes through the entire window assembly — glass, spacer, and frame together. It typically ranges from about 0.20 (excellent) to 1.20 (single-pane bad), and lower is better.

In a climate with brutal heating seasons, U-factor is the spec that shows up on your gas bill. Practical guidance for the Twin Cities:

  • 0.30 or lower — the benchmark for a quality double-pane low-E window with argon; where most good replacement projects land.
  • 0.25 or lower — territory for premium double-pane packages and most triple-pane units; noticeably warmer interior glass in January.
  • Above 0.35 — keep shopping; you're giving back the benefit of replacing your windows at all.

SHGC: the sunshine number

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient measures how much of the sun's heat passes through, from 0 to 1. A window with SHGC 0.40 admits 40% of the solar heat that hits it.

Here's where Minnesota differs from national advice: in Arizona, low SHGC is everything. Here, winter sun streaming through south windows is free heat for a house that needs it eight months a year. A moderate SHGC (roughly 0.30–0.45) is a reasonable, comfortable choice for most orientations — though if you have a west wall that bakes in July or a large sun-exposed patio door, a lower SHGC glass there is money well spent.

ENERGY STAR: the shortcut that does the math for you

ENERGY STAR certifies windows by climate zone, and Minnesota sits in the Northern zone — the strictest for U-factor. A window carrying the Northern zone mark has already been screened for exactly the performance profile our climate demands, which makes it a reliable floor for any product you consider.

It can also be worth real money: efficiency programs and utility rebates (and, when available, federal tax credits) typically key off ENERGY STAR certification — most recently the ENERGY STAR *Most Efficient* tier for the federal window credit. The label rates the unit as manufactured — a sloppy install with unsealed gaps around the frame bypasses all of it. Proper shimming, low-expansion foam insulation, and exterior air sealing are why professionally installed windows outperform identical units installed carelessly.
