
Every new window carries an NFRC label crowded with ratings: U-factor, SHGC, VT, air leakage. Salespeople toss around terms like "low-E 366" and "argon fill." Behind the jargon are a few simple physical ideas that determine how warm your rooms feel in January and what you pay to heat them.
Here's the five-minute education that makes you a smarter window shopper in Minnesota.
Low-E coatings: invisible heat mirrors
Low-emissivity (low-E) coatings are microscopically thin metallic layers on the glass that reflect heat radiation while letting visible light pass. In winter, low-E glass reflects your furnace's heat back into the room instead of radiating it outdoors. In summer, it rejects solar heat before it enters.
Coatings come in varieties tuned for different climates. In heating-dominated Minnesota, you generally want a coating that balances winter heat retention with enough solar gain — your contractor should match the coating to the home, not just quote a generic product.
Argon fill: better insulation between the panes
The space between panes in an insulated glass unit is filled with gas. Argon — denser than air, invisible, inert, and inexpensive — conducts less heat, improving the window's insulating value by a meaningful margin. It's a standard, worthwhile spec in our climate. Krypton performs even better in thin spaces but carries a big price premium, mostly appearing in high-end triple-pane units.
U-factor: the number that matters most in Minnesota
U-factor measures the rate of heat loss through the whole window assembly — frame and glass together. Lower is better. Current ENERGY STAR guidance for our northern climate zone calls for a U-factor of 0.26 or lower. Quality double-pane low-E/argon windows land around 0.27–0.30; triple-pane units reach 0.17–0.23.
When comparing quotes, compare U-factors directly — it's the single most honest efficiency number on the label.
SHGC and VT: sun and light
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much solar heat passes through — in Minnesota, moderate SHGC is often desirable for free winter heat, especially on south-facing glass. Visible Transmittance (VT) measures how much daylight comes through; higher VT means brighter rooms. Neither should be an afterthought: they shape how rooms feel year-round.
The label only matters if the install is right
