A range hood surround is a hollow wood box, framed with plywood and cleats, hung from the wall and the ceiling or the neighboring uppers, with a hood liner and blower mounted inside it. The outside gets whatever the kitchen calls for: flat panels with a shaker frame, shiplap, a tapered or angled front, a band of crown at the top and a cleat or bead at the bottom edge. The liner insert is an appliance sold by the hood makers to fit inside a custom cover; its spec sheet gives the box its inside dimensions and the mounting height above the cooktop.
The box has to be built to the liner first and to the look second. It needs a solid mounting frame into studs because a blower vibrates, a removable panel or an open bottom so the liner and filters can be serviced, and clearance to the cooktop set by the liner's instructions and the range maker. Ductwork and the electrical connection are outside our trade: the duct run goes to the HVAC installer and the wiring to a licensed electrician, and we sequence the work so nothing is closed in before it is inspected. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

- A liner that ducts out through the wall or roof vs. a recirculating unit, which changes the box design
- Whether the old hood and its cabinet have to come out first

Situations and options
Straight shaker box
A rectangular box with a flat front and sides, a shaker frame applied over it, crown at the top and a small band at the bottom. The simplest build and the easiest to match to shaker cabinets.
Tapered or angled hood
A box that narrows toward the top, or a sloped front, framed with angled cleats and skinned in panels cut to the taper. More layout work, and the crown miters are compound cuts.
Shiplap or V-groove hood
The box is skinned in horizontal shiplap or V-groove boards over a plywood frame, with corner boards at the edges and a plain cap at the top. Fits a farmhouse or cottage kitchen.
Stain-grade to match cabinets
Veneer plywood in the cabinet species with solid hardwood trim, built to take a stain. The joinery is tighter because nothing gets caulked, and the finishing is quoted as its own line.

Can you build a wood range hood over a liner insert I bought?
Yes. That is the normal way a custom hood is done: the homeowner buys a liner insert with a blower, and we build the wood surround to the dimensions on its spec sheet. Send the sheet with your photos. The box is framed so the liner screws into solid wood and can be pulled back out for service.
Do you install the hood insert and run the duct?
We build and mount the surround and set the liner into it. The duct run to the outside is done by the HVAC installer, and the wiring to the blower and lights is done by a licensed electrician. We coordinate with both so the box is open when they need it and closed up after.
How high does a range hood have to be above the stove?
The liner insert's installation sheet and the range or cooktop manual both give a minimum and maximum mounting height, and the box is built to those. Gas ranges usually call for more clearance than electric. We do not guess at it; send both model numbers and we set the height from the documents.
Can the hood cover be painted to match my cabinets?
Yes. A paint-grade surround goes in primed, filled and caulked, and painting it to match the cabinet color is quoted as a separate line. You can also paint it yourself. A stain-grade surround in the cabinet species is possible too, but a stain match on site is finish work and we tell you that before you choose.
Can you build a hood surround between two upper cabinets?
Yes. The box is sized to the gap and tied into the neighboring cabinets and the wall, with the front face set flush or slightly proud of the cabinet doors. The crown runs across the box and returns onto the cabinets so the top line is continuous. If the gap is the wrong width for the liner, we say so before ordering.
What is inside a custom wood range hood?
A plywood frame screwed to blocking in the wall and ceiling, the liner insert with its blower and filters mounted to that frame, the duct connection on top or out the back, and a wiring connection made by the electrician. The outside skin and trim are applied over the frame. The bottom is open so the filters slide out for cleaning.
